The drama over Nellie McKay's sophomore album Pretty Little Head may finally be over. And it's not because she finally found a label that gets her, it's because she decided to make her own label Hungry Mouse. The double disc will be available October 31st.
The double disc part is where all the fuss began in the first place. McKay wanted the full 65 minute 23 track version, and Columbia/Sony wanted the pared down version with 16 tracks total. The argument caused several delays, and eventually Nellie's departure from the label.
After a Broadway stint as Polly Peachum in "The Threepenny Opera," Nellie is bringing us Pretty Little Head exactly the way she wanted it: Twenty three tracks on two discs to "reclaim the feeling of flipping over a record," duets with Cyndi Lauper and K.D. Lang, and a 40 page booklet documenting the drama that Nellie had fun causing during the creation of the album:
