Outkast's Andre 3000 got out his coloring pencils and favorite crayolas. He headed over to the Cartoon Network and pitched himself a show. A show about the future. A show about himself.
One day Andre 3000 will have amassed 27 Grammies and a Nobel Prize. When this day comes he will change his name to Sunny Bridges, or at least go by this name, and turn his back on all the chump bitches who obviously can't step and decide to train young, budding musicians, leaving celebrity to go suck it.
Cartoon network of course snapped at the chance to be the home to the new series dubbed Class of 3000. Students in the late 2990s apparently still have names similar to today, and in fact even use the title Lil', which I thought we'd have figured out is stupid in the next thousand years. Sunny's students are Lil' D, Tamika, Philly Phil, Madison, Eddie and twins Kim and Kam. The show's characters represent a broad ethnic diversity, which Dre said stems from his own life growing up:
I come from the projects and [I used to] go all the way across town to school, which is in Buckhead, a prominent part of Atlanta. And I went to school with mayor's kids and commissioner's kids, so it was a mash up then. One of my best friends, he was French. Another best friend was Indian.
So when we created the show, we didn't want it to be just all black characters or all white characters. We just created a world and it kind of mirrors what's going on right now. Everybody hang out with everybody. It's not like you just stay in your own little clique. There's a huge Crayola box going on.
Class of 3000 has no official start date or time slot, but is slated for CN's November lineup. Outkast fans will want to watch because each episode promises a new song by Andre with an animated music video. Guest artists were invited to draw these music videos with contributions already by Overton Loyd, renowned for his work on album covers by Parliament, Peter Chung ( Aeon Flux ), Alan Bodner ( Iron Giant, The Life & Times of Juniper Lee ) among others.
Dre is also suggesting the show will feature many, many guest artists who will drop by and peddle their shit. Dre spoke about the likelihood of guests:
We're reaching out to a lot of people. A lot of people are interested. Every time you drop an album, you kinda go through this whole run. You do "TRL"-you do all those shows. I think 'Class of 3000' will be one of those places that record companies will say, 'We want our artist to be on this show.' It'll be a cool place.
If you're a sucker for songs with La La Las, head over to the show's homepage and join in singing the theme song. It's a pretty funky theme song.
