Afghan Whigs Give It Another Shot

Few humans succeed at looking as smug as Greg Dulli and it's his swagger that is largely responsible for the love them/hate them attitude that greets The Afghan Whigs whenever their name is mentioned.

In an unexpected turn of events, Dulli announced this week that he will be getting back together with his ex-Whigmates to record some new songs. In a year that has seen more bands attempting to score a knockout during round two than new acts stepping into the arena for the first time, the Whigs will probably find themselves to be a welcome addition to the reunion list of '06.

The band will be heading to Ardent Studios in Memphis to work with Jeff Powell, who was responsible for three Whigs albums; Gentlemen, Black Love and 1965. The plan is to record two new songs that will be included on a forthcoming Afghan Whigs retrospective that Rhino will be releasing in March or April of 2007.

With any luck the band will find themselves enjoying each other's company and working on more material. Let's hope so.

yeah, the irony of the band name is now gone since you've renamed them the Middle East Hairpieces.

Saw the Twilights with Mark Lanegan recently. The Lanegan stuff was definately the high point of the show. Didn't think much to the last Twilights album either, hopefully this reunion will inject some interest into Dulli's future efforts.

Gee....everyone's a critic...and a spellchecker, it seems. Who gives a flying FUCK about the little spelling mistakes with the name. The point is, AW is BACK!!!! That is truly some awesome news. I cannot goddamn WAIT!

Hey my apologies. I wrote this at like 7 AM. Fixing it now. Spell check doesn't wake up until at least 7:15. Mea Culpa!

I remember being at a small punk club called the Wrocklage here in 1990 or 1991 (during my freshman year of college anyway.) I just went down with some buddies because I heard it was supposed to be a cool place. In any case, the headline band that night was a little band called the Afghan Whigs.

I'd like to tell you that it was a scintillating, rocking show, but, instead, I saw Greg Dulli (at the time, I really didn't know much about them, so I didn't recognize him, but I'm pretty sure it was Dulli) screaming at someone who worked at the club, then they came on, played one song, which rocked, and left. Oh well.

The record "Gentelmen" is easily one of my favorite records. Heartbreakingly creepy and very enduring at the same time.
