A Mobile Peeping Tom: Mike Patton Joins Gnarls Barkley Tour

SATURDAY JULY 15 2006 11:00 AM

I was really excited when Mike Patton's Peeping Tom project arrived in my mailbox. With guest-stars like Massive Attack, Dan the Automator and Kid Koala, it was obvious that the disc would feature Patton's vocals over heavy beats. I wasn't let down; anyone looking for a good summer disc is encouraged to check it out.

It's appropriate, then, that Mike will be on the road with Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, who have been effective in creating their own summer jams via Gnarls Barkley. The hype is deserved; St. Elsewhere is catchy tune after catchy tune. Cee-Lo's voice is the real deal.

Because he's Mike Patton, don't expect him to be rolling solo. Pitchfork reports that Patton's bus will be full.

the touring crew also features human beatbox Rahzel, Alap Momin of Dalek, vocalist Imani Coppola (remember "Legend of a Cowgirl"?), turntablist Mike Relm, and Dub Trio, who also open on select dates.

You should also check out Patton's video for the track "Mojo". This features not only his right hand men Rahzel and Dan the Automator, but aso Danny Devito, Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 and Rachel Hunter. Uh.. sure!

General Patton once again leads his troops into battle.

The Peeping Tom record is mediocre at best, and is certainly no Fantômas, but Mike's a man of many tastes, and this is really his first foray into a record that's entirely so "accessible".

Besides, the man himself is reason enough to go to any gig in which he's involved. Who else can bring such thick tension to a performance of essentially lounge tracks?

HIs entire career considered, however, Michael Allan Patton is a consummate musician's musician. In the current avant garde, he has few very peers, and is an inspiration for countless aural soldiers.

Mike is a god. I'm praying the rumours of Peeping Tom coming down here in the new-year for Big Day Out prove to be true.

I'm not sure it's fair to compare two works that cover entirely different areas of Patton's musical ambitions. Fantômas is him pulling out all his avant-garde stuff, sound collages, pushing his limits in one way; Peeping Tom is him going straight for the pop hook, trying to see if he's got the talent in that direction as well. For what it is, it's still the best pop record all year.

Personally I find Fantomas and a good deal of his solo and collaborative stuff unlistenable, but I've listened to this album 15-20 times over the last few weeks. I guess I just prefer it when he's got actual tunes. For me it's the closest to a new FNM album that we're likely to get.
I'm just pissed I'm going to be missing him in London tonight...
