Dillinger Escape Plan Does Justin Timberlake

MONDAY MAY 29 2006 8:00 PM

If you dig the kind of metal albums that are written in 13/8 and are an endurance test to get through, then you are likely a fan of Dillinger Escape Plan. You've also probably caught them live, as the band's been on the road supporting 2004's Miss Machine since its release.

While they gear up for their high profile support slot on the upcoming AFI tour, the band is making a new EP availabile to fans through the I-Tunes Music Store. The EP, notably titled Plagiarism, includes some curiously chosen covers. Actually, the material is out of left field.

Get ready for covers of Massive Attack ("Angel"), Nine Inch Nails ("Wish"), Soundgarden ("Jesus Christ Pose") and Justin Timberlake (?) ("Like I Love You"). Looking for new songs? Forget it. However, there are new versions of Dillinger's own "The Perfect Design" and "Unretrofied" included in the set. If you're impatient and want to hear Dillinger's homage to the grunge years, check out the Soundgarden cover now, as it was posted to their Myspace page. You can digitally purchase Plagiarism starting June 13.

Also, prepare for a Miss Machine DVD in the works, which will include all music videos from that album as well as live footage. Unfortunately, it will be some time before a new Dillinger album sees the light of day. Guitarist Ben Weinman will be sidelined for arm surgery after their upcoming tour dates. At the same time, the band took 5 years between their last two albums, so this is nothing new for them. Hopefully, we will see a new full length before 2009.

Now I wonder if Plagiarism is only going to be available through I-tunes, or will they release a cd. Either way, it'll be awesome to hear some crazy covers.

The last big break the band had, to be honest, was due to Dimitri leaving, them getting accustomed to Greg, and still brought us the undeniably great "Irony Is A Dead Scene" EP with Mike Patton.

I'm still waiting for the Oingo Boingo tribute CD, though. Because it's Boingo. And DEP covering a Boingo track seems like perhaps the key to musical godliness. tongue

One of the best covers I've ever heard was 'Hit me baby one more time' by Bolwing for Soup.
I say best because they not only make the song more than barable, dare I say good.
But it also makes a mockery of the origional.

So I'd give these guys a chance. Metals bands tend to do good covers of non metal things.

13/8 for the sake of 13/8 is silly.

Man, how I tried to like Dream Theater, but I have an aversion to vocal vibratos that you could drive a truck thru.

1. this is the first itunes cd I have actually thought of buying

2. This isnt the first time they have covered that NIN song or that Justin Timberlake song. They played new years eve in 2003 I believe and covered them both. You can find video clips on the internet.

You know, it's easier to understand a person's reasoning for believing something if they state why.
