Metallica vs. Swedish Steel Workers

Once upon a time there was a band called Metallica that was focused on successfully writing killer records. They lost a bass player, replaced him, wrote a mindblowing album (...And Justice For All), met Bob Rock, wrote a hit song, sold 300 trillion records and so on. Then Metallica waged war against a file sharing service called Napster, and the band went from Metal Militia to money hungry corporation. Internet savvy fans longed for a band that cared more about thrashing and Jagermeister than some kids downloading "The Shortest Straw". After many lawsuits, Napster soon evaporated and Metallica moved on from trying to destroy music downloads, to trying to destroy their legacy. But hey, what do they care, they have more money than God and that's enough! Right? Wrong!

Metallica is now threatening to sue a Swedish steelworker's union called Metall for registering the domain name metallica.st for their web headquarters. Hey, if you are gonna fuck over the working man by giving him false metal to listen to on the job, you may as well hit him in the wallet as well.

Metallica's lawyers have gone as far as to contact the Swedish ISP Bahnhof, who is managing the domain name. Bahnhof representatives don't think Metallica have a legal leg to stand on, but I guess time will tell. Bahnhof owner Oscar Swartz keeps a blog where he has written about the case.

Metallica is currently in the studio with Rick Rubin, meditating and maybe getting around to writing a new record.

Because your average Metallica fan could NEVER tell the difference between "Master of Puppets" and fifteen tons of cold rolled steel. whatever

Oh. Wait a minute...

Ironic that the people they are suing are producing authentic metal. They should be requesting that, rather than money.

Rick Rubin will collect his money, leave for 3 months come back, slide a level up and leave and get credits. This record will suck.

My money is on him sliding a level down. That's the genius.

This comes from your vast experience working with him, I suppose?

I don't get the Rick Rubin animus that's bandied about here. He's put out some really phenomenal records, and seems to still be going strong. If anyone stands a good chance of bringing Metallica back to their roots and putting out a kickass record, it's him.

More time working on music and less protecting their catalog and name might make Metallica interesting again. For now I'll stick with Opeth.

Rick Rubin produced my spoken word quadruple CD box set. Release date is set to piggy-back the Metallica release.

Relax, dude. Noone is hating on Rick> he is a cartoon character of sorts, is all. The man produced Reign in Blood. He can work with Hitler's corpse for all I care.
