Freedom

I admit, before Andrew Sullivan linked to the story, I'd never heard of Deeyah, the Iranian-British-Norwegian singer known as the "Muslim Madonna." The video for "What Will Be?" is a rather mild, though of course extremely topical, statement about freedom of speech and abuse and oppression of women.

The anti-Burka message and images have sparked threats - they were "death threats" according to Sullivan, which is plausible but not actually stated in the linked article. Whatever the nature of the threats, though, they have been effective:

Asian music TV network B4U TV dropped the video after receiving complaints.

"We played the video a couple of times and then did not play it again. We had threats which we were forced to take very seriously. These things are sensitive issues," an employee said.

Watch it while you still can.

Sweet. Her song "What Will It Be" is now officially on my myspace profile.

All I need to do now is to post some new caricatures of Muhammed on there too just to make sure I'll have a fatwa issued against me. biggrin
