A Different Guitar for Every Song, and Three Costume Changes

MONDAY FEBRUARY 20 2006 9:00 AM

Submitted by Dr_Frank. Edited By Dr_Frank.

I've never heard the term "pomp rock" before, but I do get the idea from this amusing review of the "Spinal Tapestry" on exhibit at a recent Darkness show:

The TV screens flanking the stage show a film of the Darkness 'landing' in a helicopter. Searchlights sweep the venue, piped bagpipes blare. Drummer Ed Graham, new bassist Richie Edwards, and guitarist Dan Hawkins take their places onstage, launching into 'Knockers', a very silly song about, yes, well, you know. Finally, singer Justin Hawkins hoves into sight, suspended above the crowd in a giant pair of breasts. The nipples light up. It's not quite AC/DC's blow-up doll, Rosie, but it has something of the innocent stupidity of the Darkness's first album, before the cocaine psychosis set in, the waspish Justin started slagging off Chris Martin and Keane, and the band lost a bass player to 'musical differences'.

Also, they "mislaid a large section of their fanbase along the line." Oops.

They are after all a Spinal Tap for the new millenium. I would be more concerned about metallica and megadeth that do the same and they pretend to be serious, all this refering to the "a different guitar for every song and the costume changes" (if you call Robert Trujillo's change of shirt a costume change)

i saw them, they were fun. what more do you need? if i want serious i'll stick on tom waites or nick cave or somesuch, if i want to avoid a feeling of impending doom i'll stick on the darkness.
i wish i could afford a different guitar fo every song smile

But as I've said before, being an ironically shitty band means you're still a shitty band.

It was funny when I thought they were a joke. Got less amusing when I realised they were being serious.

Dude. DUDE. NO. surreal

But back on track, I find The Darkness hilarious. I wouldn't pay for one of their albums or anything, but I'm not above cranking up "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and rolling the windows down in crowded parking lots whenever it was on the radio.

The best thing that ever came from that song is that it ended up on one of the "Karaoke Revolution" games. Everybody, sing along!
