David Reilly, Former God Lives Underwater Frontman, Dead at 34

TUESDAY OCTOBER 18 2005 6:00 PM

David Reilly, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and former vocalist for the band God Lives Underwater, died Sunday at the age of 34 from complications of long-standing stomach problems -- an untreated infection -- according to a Corporate Punishment Records statement:

Corporate Punishment resident, Thom Hazaert, (affectionately dubbed “the Rooster” by Reilly)... spent a big chunk of the past few years serving as Reilly’s manager, most recently serving as a management and creative consultant.

“I am honored and humbled to have had the chance to work with someone like him, an amazing artist and visionary, who in my eyes will always be one of the most talented people to ever walk the Earth,” says Hazaert. “David will remain forever in our hearts and will be sorely missed by everyone at CPR.”

Reilly had spent much time in recent years speaking out about his longtime bout with substance abuse. He was 34.

God Lives Underwater had a hit in 1998 with "From Your Mouth". Their most recent album was 2004's Up Off the Floor. Last year also saw the release of Reilly's debut solo EP, Inside.

That sucks. Although I'm one of... well... one person that I know who has their cds. But I have three of them, hah.

I feel bad about it.

I didn't know he had a solo cd though... man do I want it.

crap this does suck, i've always had love for glu. didn't know he'd done a solo disc, just listened to some on his site... gotta get it, i do believe.... always regretted not getting to see 'em at "the underground" in tallahassee (fsu) years and years ago when they played.. always saw them as the lighter version of nin and the more electronica version of stabbing westward..

Weird... I dusted those albums off a couple weeks ago. They were one of the great unnoticed bands of the 90's. "Lonely Again" will always be one of my favorite songs of that decade. They had a sound that was totally unique at the time, and now really embodies that era.

I hung out with him once before a show at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO (roughly '95-96), and he was the nicest, most down to earth guy.

I remember first seeing GLU in Portland at The Roseland when they were the opening act for KMFDM. The other supporting act was Korn.

I'd never heard of GLU or Korn at that point (I think it was back in '94?). But GLU impressed me.

This is so disheartening. I loved his Fluzee album dedicated to his dead girlfriend, I believe?

He had just signed a new contract, gotten married and cleaned up and then...died of a bleeding ulcer.

Sad.
