...And this is your brain on IBM

Wow, the same day CHRISTOPHER submits an article about simulating a portion of the universe, IBM and a Swiss University team have begun to simulate the entire human brain, down to the molecular level.

The hope is that the virtual brain will help shed light on some aspects of human cognition, such as perception, memory and perhaps even consciousness.

It will be the first time humans will be able to observe the electrical code our brains use to represent the world, and to do so in real time, says Henry Markram, director of Brain and Mind Institute at the Ecole Polytecnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

Using a computer called "Blue Brain", Markram hopes to make an identical replica of the brain in the digital world, using research he has done over the past few decades.

Using pioneering techniques, they have studied precisely how individual neurons behave electrically and built up a set of rules for how different types of neurons connect to one another.

Very thin slices of mouse brain were kept alive under a microscope and probed electrically before being stained to reveal the synaptic, or nerve, connections. “We have the largest database in the world of single neurons that have been recorded and stained,” says Markram.

The end product, which will take at least a decade to achieve, can then be stimulated and observed to see how different parts of the brain behave. For example, visual information can be inputted to the visual cortex, while Blue Brain’s response is observed.

I don't know about you guys, but this could be absolutely revolutionary in the understanding of how the brain works. Also, it could lead to the futurist's prediction of human brains on computers by 2050 that was reported on earlier (not sure where that article is now).

Download your brain by 2050

So, will this mean we have a fantastic understanding of slivers of mouse brain, or will this knowledge be transferable? confused

While I applaud this project, I doubt that the zombies will be fooled.

We could have thinking computers with a powerful drive to eat cheese and chew things...

Followed then by cat-brained computers with a compunction to do nothing for most of the day, then go mental & destroy your network or kill small, cute hosts in neighbouring networks (look out Mac fans tongue ) and leave remnants of their internal code in your inbox.

Viva the future!

I agree this could go either way, but at he risk of sounding pessimistic I am willing to bet it will go south.

They didn't name it HAL? Fuck, I feel cheated.

[EDITed because it needs to be said]

I for one welcome our new computer overlord.
