Net Addicts Ineligible for Draft in Finland

Live in Finland? Want to avoid getting drafted into the armed services? All you need to do is develop an unhealthy addiction to the internet, and your freedom is guaranteed.

More and more young people are always on the internet day and night. They get up around noon and have neither friends nor hobbies. When they get into the army, it's a shock to them," Jyrki Kivelae, head of the conscription division at the Finnish defence staff, said.

Kivelae said the internet addicts were unable to adjust to boot camp routines that mean getting up at six every monring, undergoing hard physical training, and sharing living and sleeping quarters with 10 others.

"It's really a shock to them, they are physically too weak to do the service, and mentally unprepared to deal with people directly and not through the internet," Kivelae said.

I think it would be much preferable not to have a draft at all. By all accounts I've heard, not even the military likes the draft. Only politicians who don't plan to use the military well want one.

That is actually the reason behind the story. Finnish army is drafting much more people than what they really need. Thus, they really don't want to keep anyone inside who is not able/motivated to serve. Basically all you need to do is ask to get out to get out. (The real story (?) here is that there are more and more Internet-addicted young people who really don't cope the "meat space", not the Finnish army part)

MM, who was able to serve full 12 months, although he already had Internet-access during most of the time after the basic training period (and it was 1995)

uhm, in my country there's no more draft. it's all voluntary army, and that's better.
sorry, but makes me laugh thinking about finnish army... what they do all day? who should attack Finland? biggrin tongue
