Hubble Space Telescope’s Last Days

NASA officials have announced that as early as 2007, the Hubble Space Telescope will be taken off support. The telescope has taken some of the most stunning images of our galaxy and beyond for the past eleven years. NASA’s head of space flight, Bill Readdy, defended the decision saying:

It would be too difficult for NASA to prepare a second, backup shuttle on the ground in case of an emergency during the Hubble mission.

Don’t be too glum-- the Hubble is supposed to be replaced in 2011.

I don't see why they don't just retool another spysat for telescope duty to fill the gap in coverage. You do know about the Hubble being a retooled spysat, right?
