Missy Suicide Takes a Bite Out of Apple on G4

Missy, co-founder of SuicideGirls on G4's "Attack of the Show."

We were all briefed about the controversy surrounding the removal of 5,000 "sexually explicit" applications in the App Store, including SuicideGirls very own Flip Strip app.

(If you don't know about this yet, check out Nicole's article here.)

In the most generic wording possible, SG was given notice of the programs removal at 10 at night, after having already deleted it from iTunes:

"The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, SuicideGirls -- Flip Strip, contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution.

However, we have recently received numerous complains from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately. We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application."

When asked if Missy was planning on reformulating the FlipStrip app to be approved by Apple, she wittily remarked:

"We could reformulate it and show the girls in Victorian Era bathing suits, you know.. maybe show a little ankle."

How can we conquer censorship? It's clearly time to start the revolution of sexy starched collars! Who's with me!

Don't like it, make your own site - make your own platform - sell your own App through your own channel.

Apple decided to stop selling a product through their app store, is that right? Why is outrage being manufactured over this again?

Probably because people think you should be able to put what you want on your own phone and creating some bizarre moral standard is asinine.

Well, not really. The question is whether or not a private entity's refusal to traffic in certain products actually constitutes imposing a moral standard on others. As in, if I don't want to sell porn in my store, am I imposing a moral standard on my customers? Again, is Suicide Girls imposing a moral standard on us by not trafficking in hardcore porn?

No they're not.

But then, Suicide Girls doesn't control what other content you might want to have on your computer. Without hacking or jailbreaking your iPhone, Apple sort of does.

On the other hand, I don't own an iPhone, so that is only second-hand knowledge. I might be completely off base.

SG also didn't invent, build, and sell you your computer, and they don't maintain close control of how you can put new programs on your computer. Buying an iPhone is like moving into certain gated communities--you're not just buying the product/home, you're subscribing to their rules on how your product/home can be used. With the iPhone, you have a limited selection of apps; in the gated community, it's stuff like keeping your lawn mowed to a certain height, only using certain types of rock tiles for your front walk, etcetera. If you don't like the rules, you have the option of purchasing a different phone or moving to a different neighborhood.

At least Apple has their priorities straight. Protecting America from bras and underpants: check. Preventing exploitative child labor: hey, man, we're totally getting to that.

(EDIT: To be clear, "you" is not skeptik. I'm speaking generally.)

Buy a different phone, because you don't like Apple's content decisions.

It's not censorship. A double-standard, maybe, but Apple's working perfectly within their rights. If they didn't have such a choke-hold on the content you can access on your phone, this wouldn't even be an issue - so maybe that's the thing people should be upset about, except that's always been the case so it seems kind of silly to act like it wasn't known beforehand. So maybe those people shouldn't have purchased an iPhone in the first place. If you thought the terms of service were unreasonable, you shouldn't have agreed to them.

I think what skeptik is trying to add is that the comparison of SG to Apple's iStore is not complete. It is a good comparison in terms of a private institution executing its policies. However they arguably differ in that Apple is acting as a distributor, and SG is comparatively acting as a producer.

A more suitable comparison might be examining Netflix's policy on NC-17 films in comparison to Apple's no-skin policy. Even then the market share is not comparable, and the MPAA is calling the shots more so than Netflix.

Not that I really care. I'm over the consumer gadget thing myself.

sorry to be a prude, but suicide girls are available online for a fair price. this is hardly a sob story.

It's just the thought of it that bothered me really. I don't even have an iPhone.

Weird, just weird.

The stupid thing is that its not even 'sexual' really. Its kinda funny that it was up; but recently Steve Jobs said "No sexual content for the iPad" and now the iPhone apps are being reviewed.
