Missy Suicide Takes a Bite Out of Apple on G4

Missy, co-founder of SuicideGirls on G4's "Attack of the Show."

We were all briefed about the controversy surrounding the removal of 5,000 "sexually explicit" applications in the App Store, including SuicideGirls very own Flip Strip app.

(If you don't know about this yet, check out Nicole's article here.)

In the most generic wording possible, SG was given notice of the programs removal at 10 at night, after having already deleted it from iTunes:

"The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, SuicideGirls -- Flip Strip, contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution.

However, we have recently received numerous complains from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately. We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application."

When asked if Missy was planning on reformulating the FlipStrip app to be approved by Apple, she wittily remarked:

"We could reformulate it and show the girls in Victorian Era bathing suits, you know.. maybe show a little ankle."

How can we conquer censorship? It's clearly time to start the revolution of sexy starched collars! Who's with me!

Personally, I have the app, and I wouldn't find it offensive. The internet offers FAR FAR worse content than this app.

It's just the thought of it that bothered me really. I don't even have an iPhone.

Hey, I like Apple products too. But if I were you, I'd take my product to their competitor - Google.

You want to get Tipper Gore on us? Fine. We'll go to your competitor.

yes it is capitalism, but tis also a BIG example on how powerful a corporation can be with blocking the distribution of media. this is still blatant censorship - and that is never good.

The line between censorship and exercise of rights is often fine, but in this instance, it's definitely not censorship. To use this site as an example, Suicide Girls does not sell hardcore pornography. I don't think that's censorship--SG owns the site, so they get to decide what's available on the site. Apple's decision to not sell certain risque products in their own store is unfortunate, but falls in the same category. The only difference that could be said to exist is that there are innumerable alternative venues to SG where one can purchase access to images of naked girls, while there are far fewer alternatives to purchasing iPhone apps. But again--it's Apple's product, start to finish. Visa's policies on online pornography transactions fall much closer to the "censorship" line.
