Apps In Jeopardy: iTunes Spits Out Apple's Adult Fun

SuicideGirls co-founder Missy will sit down with Kevin Pereira to discuss Apple's recent removal of the SuicideGirls: Flip Strip application from Apple's iTunes store on today's episode of Attack of the Show on G4.

The application was recently removed along with about 5,000 other overtly sexual apps, in accordance with apple's new content guidelines. No definition of those guidelines have been published as of yet.

SuicideGirls Flip Strip App was based on the classic nudie pen concept -- with a high tech twist. It was a cheeky little program, featuring models who stripped down to their underwear when the user's iPhone was inverted, but displayed no actual nudity. The Flip Strip became the fourth most popular free iPhone App at the iTunes store following its release in May 2009. It garnered over 1 million downloads in a matter of days, with total downloads exceeding 5 million before the app was pulled.

Currently you may still download Seduce A SuicideGirl, as well as Playboy's application, but several apps from Maxim have been removed.

Tune into G4 at 7PM EST to hear Missy's thoughts on the removal.

**Update**

The fabulous folks at Gizmodo have apparently got hold of Apple's new puzzlingly puritanical guidelines, and they make for pretty hilarious reading:

1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn't ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)
5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned
6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble "overtly sexual!)
7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but …)

SG particularly likes the ban on men in bikinis. At least this policy is an equal opportunities FAIL. Check Gizmodo's original story for more mockery/details.

Playboy is till on there because;

When asked why some apps with adult content had remained intact he said that Apple took into consideration how "well-known" companies were as well as whether they had "previously published material".

I second the Droid. I love mine. I had to get one when AT&T told me my new home in New Mexico wasn't part of the nationwide network. frown

Droid is open source, and they don't give a whooly shit what you put on there. wink

Glad I added the flip strip app when I had the chance. Apple's philosophy continues to disappoint me.... "freedom to download 100,000+ apps, but ONLY the apps we want you to have."

Anyone know if iTunes removes the SG app the next time you plug in to sync music, etc?

What's really crazy is that fact that right now I'm reading an article about how Digital Playground is currently working on something for the iPad...

It's so nuts. Even primetime network TV is way more intense than a lot of these apps they've taken down.

Apparently, you don't watch soap operas or any sort of workout/fitness programming. I mean, I don't either but both are more sexually suggestive than flip strip.

I invite everyone to join the Android group.
Also, please make an app for Android. We can install them from anywhere so ever changing content rules aren't a worry.

Kotaku had a good write-up on the subject:

"It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see," said Apple exec Phil Schiller.

These are the same children able to download R-rated movies and songs with explicit lyrics — with valid credit cards. Hey, that's just like the App Store! Can't Apple create an age gate for its mature app content? Or must it insist on treating all of us like small children?

When asked why the Sports Illustrated and FHM apps remain in the iTunes Applications store, Schiller replied, "The difference is this is a well-known company with previously published material available broadly in a well-accepted format." Read: Sports Illustrated and FHM (and Playboy, too) aren't some small-time developers.

Good thing the App Store prevents us from seeing women and men in bikinis, because racy stuff like that is never shown in magazine ads, television commercials, billboards and TV shows. And ice-skating outfits, too! Phew.

Good thing one cannot access the internet for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And good thing there is no pornography on the internet.

So if we have the App, does that mean it's like a collector's item?
