At last: revenge.

Some might argue that Red still has some fight left in him, but it’s clear from recent announcements that the entertainment industry has chosen Blu-ray as their champion, leaving HD-DVD on limited life support.

The first blow came on January 4th, when Warner Brothers announced that beginning later this year they would release titles exclusively on the Blu-ray format.

(January 4, 2008 – Burbank, CA) – In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

Then two more in rapid succession: both Netflix and Blockbuster will dump HD-DVD for Blu-ray, though they plan to keep HD-DVD on the shelves for around a year before those titles disappear all together.

In a huge blow to Toshiba, Universal, and the rest of the HD DVD devotees, rental giant Blockbuster has decided to stock only Blu-ray discs in the vast majority of its nationwide locations, although HD DVD titles will continue to be offered online and in the 250 (out of 1,450) stores that have been testing both formats since last year.

If that wasn’t enough, both Best Buy and Wal-Mart kicked HD-DVD to the curb barely a week ago. And today Universal issued a press release announcing their side in the Hi-Def Format War.

"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def´s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

Oh, God, do you still think there’s a chance that HD-DVD might overcome? A small sliver of hope? Hope you have a hankie, because you’re wrong. HD-DVD’s most ardent supporter has also called it quits.

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

We barely knew him. May he rest in peace.

punk feels sorry for those who couldn’t wait to see who came out on top and bought an HD-DVD player. Really, he does. Hat-tip to Bennybum.

I hope you all love paying the $400 per Blu-ray player (the PS3) and the $30 a pop Blu-ray Movies and Blu-ray Disc for your $400 Blu-ray Drives that will now Inflate the prices of desk top computers and laptops even higher. Where as the HD-DVD Players were $150 (including the two free HD-DVD's really only making it $100).

So please, all of the worlds capitalists, enjoy spending more money for something that gives you the same quality, but for 4 times the price. Congrads capitalism, fucking the U.S. of A.'s Consumers once again, and again, and again.

Infidious = bill gates?

Probably. You can rework that post by substituting HD-DVD/Blu-ray with VHS/DVD or Betamax/VHS, and I think it would be pretty similar to the last couple of times we've done this dance.

According to this BBC News article from last month, the Blu-Ray software is still evolving, and people with older stand-alone players won't be able to use special features on newer discs. A version of the software called Profile 2.0, which includes internet connectivity, won't be out until later this year. So, someone thinking about buying a Blu-Ray player might want to wait until after that. The PS3 doesn't have this issue because you can upgrade the software.

early adopter gadget freaks don't wait for future generations. there's always a future generation, so no use in putting it off when you can buy another one in a few months!

Yes, because we're all still paying $300 for DVD players and $30 for DVDs. Prices will never come down as the technology matures.

I've heard that's one good reason to get PS3 if you want Blu-Ray. that, and the fact that it's supposed to be a really good player in it's own right. But surely downloadable firmware updates that you can burn to a cd will be available for regular players as well.

Surprisingly relevant. Who buys porn on DVD's or magazines anymore?

It's quite unfortunate for most Xbox 360 owners who bought the expansion for HD-DVD compatibility. Its funny how Sony actually came through in this little struggle for media power. I mean for years Sony has been trying to redefine technology in some way to make their name a household standard.

They did the same thing in the 70's with the infamous Betamax. The huge format war between industry standard VHS and Betamax ended in blood, with women strewn about in the streets and men hanged by their mustaches.

Fortunately Sony didn't lose everything on their PS3, for awhile, the system looked like it was going to fail miserably and be discontinued months after it's release. It's Blu-Ray technology really helped it stay afloat.

Im a proud supporter of Red, for now, most likely because i own an Xbox 360.

Still, paying $30 for a HD-DVD copy of Sahara is the equivalent of masturbating with sand paper.

As if the dvd format war wasn't enough, Sony has also released a new version of HD digital recording with their new XDCAM system. Oooo, sounds extreme. Which i honestly don't think will suffice to Panasonic's revolutionary P2 card system, or firestore's HDD systems.

If anyone has read this far, Props.

Sony is like that girl in all your high school classes that answered every question by starting her answer with "Well,..." and you would quietly wait till she finished her ass kissing ramble, and cleverly retort with "Cunt." Sony thinks they can always shape the future of technology by coming out with something new and cool.

Last note, Sony can suck the proverbial media industry cock all they want, I am going to play my Xbox, listen to my ipod, shoot with my canon and watch HD-Dvd's on my magnavox.

dude love.

Depends on the DVDs. Criterion Collection regularly runs for more than that. Then again, it's money well spent. Then again, I'm a movie geek.

I got the gist of your argument, though. wink

I'm sorry, I couldn't take anything you said seriously after this sentence. Certainly, Sony hasn't had much prior success in format wars (see: Betamax and ATRAC), but to say Sony has been trying to make their name a household standard is to imply that it wasn't already. The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling video game console ever, and before "iPod" was a generic term for a portable music player, "Walkman" was. Sony has a long history of success across the spectrum of consumer electronics, and to suggest that they need Blu-ray to make them a household name is laughable. Hell, what makes you even think the average consumer associates Sony with Blu-ray?
