At last: revenge.

Some might argue that Red still has some fight left in him, but it’s clear from recent announcements that the entertainment industry has chosen Blu-ray as their champion, leaving HD-DVD on limited life support.

The first blow came on January 4th, when Warner Brothers announced that beginning later this year they would release titles exclusively on the Blu-ray format.

(January 4, 2008 – Burbank, CA) – In response to consumer demand, Warner Bros. Entertainment will release its high-definition DVD titles exclusively in the Blu-ray disc format beginning later this year, it was announced today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & CEO, Warner Bros. and Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

Then two more in rapid succession: both Netflix and Blockbuster will dump HD-DVD for Blu-ray, though they plan to keep HD-DVD on the shelves for around a year before those titles disappear all together.

In a huge blow to Toshiba, Universal, and the rest of the HD DVD devotees, rental giant Blockbuster has decided to stock only Blu-ray discs in the vast majority of its nationwide locations, although HD DVD titles will continue to be offered online and in the 250 (out of 1,450) stores that have been testing both formats since last year.

If that wasn’t enough, both Best Buy and Wal-Mart kicked HD-DVD to the curb barely a week ago. And today Universal issued a press release announcing their side in the Hi-Def Format War.

"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def´s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

Oh, God, do you still think there’s a chance that HD-DVD might overcome? A small sliver of hope? Hope you have a hankie, because you’re wrong. HD-DVD’s most ardent supporter has also called it quits.

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

We barely knew him. May he rest in peace.

punk feels sorry for those who couldn’t wait to see who came out on top and bought an HD-DVD player. Really, he does. Hat-tip to Bennybum.

Okay...want.

It's still in a testing period, which probably means you can have it in a few years... if you move to Japan.

There's still an issue of the latency inherent to satellite-based Internet. I wonder how they plan to address it?

"Among other uses, this will make possible great advances in telemedicine, which will bring high-quality medical treatment to remote areas, and in distance education, connecting students and teachers separated by great distances," JAXA said, and added, "Also, porn."

Here is more information on the satellite.

It has two antennas, one for up to approx 155Mbps down and one for up to approx. 1.2Gbps down. For one-way content like websites or movie downloads, latency isn't a huge deal.

Here's the blu-ray problem.

But NPD uncovered a very telling statistic in its 2007 report on high-definition video: 73 percent of current HDTV owners "are satisfied with DVD and don't feel the need to replace" their current players.

I'm in that camp, myself.

Well. That. and the fact that they need to send up a "couple" more before it's truly effective, if this one even works.

General Japanese Public won't even be able to use it:

Japan has yet to join the lucrative international satellite market, and Kizuna, which should be in operation for five years, is not intended for commercial use. Its large H-2A rocket is one of the most advanced and reliable in the world %u2014 Saturday's was its eighth straight successful launch.

Unfortunately all this does is make me realize how far behind the times the United States is falling behind in the times. Japan is pushing their space program and are planning on inhabiting the moon by 2025.

And i agree with Reaper, i am happy with my DVD's at the moment, even if i was to switch over, i would have a multi-player or a DVD player and Blu-ray player. But i see no need for it now. It will be a long time off.

Most Blu-Ray players (all of the ones I have seen & tested) will play standard-def dvd's as well as Blu-Ray discs, so you won't need 2 players.

Like LPs -> cassettes -> cds, the supply side will drive this. At some point, the distributors will cease making SD dvd's and you will have to buy Blu-Ray.

There are ways to compensate for the delay. Look them up.

Since you seem to know what they are, why don't you produce some sources? All I know is that it takes 240 milliseconds for a signal to travel from the ground to a geosynchronous orbit and back, and that can add up fast.

I'd think people who spent that much money to put a satellite in orbit would have it worked out.

Thank god that crap of a format (HD DVD) lost. The fact Microcrap was behind it was enough for me to know it sucked!!!!

Besides our Blu-Ray movies absolutely kick ass.

There was barely any difference in picture quality between the two formats. HD-DVD had much cooler special features on the whole and best of all....was region free. The idea of having access to greater choice and lower price by importing my discs from North America was awesome.

With Blu-Ray i'd be stuck with whatever they actually release in the UK, and even then i'd have to pay the equivalent of nearly $50 a movie.

Also the fact that Microsoft used it in some of their technology isnt really a decent reason to outright hate the format. You hate CDs and DVDs too?
