Amidst all the hoopla in the $40 billion global video game industry, it seems Santa doesn't care about Blu-Ray or overpriced consoles either.

Nintendo's Wii, the little arm-waving, ass-shaking system that could, outsold Sony's Playstation 3 by more than three to one in Japan in 2007, regaining first place in total sales. Mario & Co. couldn't be happier.

Nintendo's Wii outsold rival Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) three-fold in Japan last year, helping the country's multi-billion dollar video game market to notch up its best ever year, a survey showed Monday.

Nintendo sold about 3.63 million Wii consoles in its home market in 2007 while Sony sold 1.21 million PS3s, according to magazine publisher Enterbrain.

The Wii also trounced the PS3 more than three-fold in the key year-end sales period between November 25 and December 30, selling 774,123 Wii consoles against Sony's sales of 232,421 PS3s, the survey showed.

Nintendo enjoys the same 3-1 margin in sales against Sony in North America. When your system can't last long enough on shelves to gather dust (and customers are left sucking the dubious cash cow cock of chain stores to buy overpriced "bundle" packages), you're doing something right.

Or, you know, your company fails at increasing supply to meet demand.

I happen to have a sunnier disposition where the Wii is concerned. Mostly because I camped out for 12 hours outside the nearest Target that fateful November morn to be #2 in line. Your personal experience may differ.

"Consumers both in Japan and overseas are still attracted by the Wii, which remains a fresh concept," said Hiroshi Kamide, a game analyst at KBC Securities.

Sony "either has to slash the price further or increase the number of games available, which is something software makers are reluctant to do" because there are too few owners in the US to make it worthwhile, he added.

Kamide also notes the Xbox 360 is still going strong this side of the pond. That's right. Microsoft is still #1 in the US, selling more than 4 million units this past holiday. However, Bill Gates' little "Red Ring of Death"ed love child is still holding the rear in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Microsoft sold 257,841 Xbox 360s last year in Japan, continuing to struggle on its rivals' home turf two years after the console's launch, the survey showed.

Not to mention the problems they encountered with Xbox Live outages.

Video game blogs such as Joystiq recently reported that users had a slew of problems with the site over the holidays, including trouble signing in, downloading media and getting matched with online opponents.

"We are disappointed in our performance," wrote Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live, on the Xbox 360 support Web site.

Whitten said record-breaking traffic and new-member sign-ups caused the "intermittent Xbox Live issues.".

Much like the storied sports rivalries of old, the fight between the Big Three and their loyal fanbases is everlasting. I don't know about you, but I'm too busy killing zombies and saving princesses to go throw the ball around.

Bah. I may only own seven (counting my PCs as one) but I emulate the rest - superior experience, easier game availability.

And, I dunno. The PS3's failure is unsurprising, but I can't say as I really get the success of the Wii. I've played with one a couple of times now and I'm sure not seeing the attraction. Now, granted, I've only gotten to play things like Wii Sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids (2), which are certainly not my natural gaming inclination. So that probably contributes. But these games have been centered around taking advantage of the motion controls, and they felt unnatural, imprecise, and hard to use. I have trouble imagining this boding well for more elaborate games that I might actually want to play on my own like Zelda, Metroid Prime, Super Paper Mario, and RE4.

During the Christmas season I got no less than fifty phone-calls in an eight hour day asking if we had any Wii's in stock. 9.99% of the time the answer was no. Even after Christmas, the calls keep coming in on a regular basis, though not nearly as often as during the Christmas rush.

When we do get a shipment in, they don't last long enough to even put them on the shelf. During Christmas we sold them right out of the boxes we unpacked. No one cared how much they cost, if it was the system itself, or the bundle, they just forked over the cash and walked awake with pride at their new purchase (and I'm sure, for many, a hurting in their wallet and bank account).

Even now, we still sell them right out of the boxes. We took to replacing the spot in the case with Wii Play's (which also don't last very long) and Guitar Hero for Wii (also a rare commodity to be found). Occasionally, to be assholes, we will sell the Wii's we get in stock from the back of the store where we used to have layaway. There really is no other reason than we want to be obnoxious and we're tired of people bitching at us that someone else got the counter before them and got the last Wii out of the shipping box.

We're still fully stocked on PS3's (both 40GB and 80GB) and the X-Box are pretty steady on their coming in and going out. Surprisingly, we sell more Elites than Arcades (previously the core system) and I haven't seen a Pro in stock in our store in a couple of weeks.

Obviously, when faced with the number of consoles sold, it looks like Sony has lost the war, but luckily for them this isn't the only war they were fighting with the PS3.
If you compare the numbers of PS3s sold with the number of HDDVD players sold, you'll see that one very important strategy of Sony's is paying off, Blu Ray is winning its own war. Sales of Blu Ray discs are 2-1 over HDDVD, despite HDDVD dedicated players outselling their Blu Ray opposition, but there are millions of PS3s in American homes and their owners are buying the bulk of the movies. That's enough to have made Warner Brothers jump ship to go Blu Ray exclusive. Sony now have 70% of movie distributors exclusively using their format, and are going to reap huge rewards for much longer than a console's life cycle from the sales of Blu Ray players and licence fees.
Sony completely fucked up the console war, that's without doubt, and of course they would've loved to have won it, but the PS3 looks like it has secured them the HD format victory, and that was a war with much more at stake.

wii has the lowest attachment rate (how many games are sold per system) than even ps3. xbox is in the lead in that category.

people are buying wiis like they buy ping pong tables. fun thing to drag out on holidays and such, and throw in wii sports. then pack it up and put it back in the cabinet.

nine, not counting our six PCs in operation (and four more in the basement). no PS3 or 360 yet, but the Wii gets plenty of use. it's just fun, and rarely requires a significant investment of time for a game to become interesting. or maybe I'm just getting old.

In my opinion the PS3 still hasn't had an "it" title, that killer app. that everyone must have. They released Resistance: Fall of Man - big whoop. No competition for Halo 3 (sold 8 million copies so far, comparied to Fall of Man's 2 million) or the fun factor of a Wii. It's horrible price tag killed any out-of-the-door purchases and only since their price drop have they picked up a little.

C'mon, you release a year after the 360 comes out and the lowest price is $500? The Xbox 360 Core was $300 and the standard system was $400. The Wii has always been $250, though it was late in comparison to the 360 as well.

Plus the PS3 costs somewhere between $800-900 to produce. Sony is losing a phenomenal amount of money on the system itself. But that's typical as I understand; games and accessories are what they (Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony) make the bulk of their money on.

Once MGS4: Guns of the Patriots come out...that may fuel some additional purchases. I've even considered it, but I'm OK with my 360 and Wii for now. I already have enough games I haven't played yet.

same at my store, and for me, save we actually use what used to be layaway for shipping stuff to the villages out in the wild, so selling them back there is right out. i've started trying to come up with new and confusing ways to say we don't have Wii.

customers are even used to getting laughed at for asking, by now.

Ooh, I should try that. My favorite is when they ask me if I know when they are coming in. As a policy, my store does not tell us when we will be getting shipments like that so that we can't tell friends and family when they are coming in so that everyone receives a fair shot at getting one. So, I always tell them no, then they bitch at me for not knowing. I always enjoy telling them to take it up with my manager, who in turn confirms what I had said and they leave in a big huff. Though, I had a couple of people accuse me of maliciously withholding that information from them, claiming that I actually did know when they were being shipped to us.

I hate people.

I already own a Wii, but I also plan on buying the PS3 right around when GTAIV comes out. The 360 is good, but it's more of something I go over to a friend's to play than what I would want.

So, overall, I think the Wii's hold on the lead is going to be a little shakier next year when the PS3 titles start picking up in quality.

also, there is the fact that Nintendo doesn't give out advanced notice of shipments, at least to up here, anyway. Wiis come straight from them.

customer: "do you know when you'll be getting in more Wiis?"
me: "the future."[1]

is "Wiis" really the plural of Wii? or should they be refered to as "Wii systems" when using plurals?
