World of Warcraft's Real Epic Mount

A few days ago a story started making the rounds about a lady who placed a craigslist ad offering to trade sex for a flying epic mount or at least the 5000 gold required to buy one. While buying gold is clearly a violation of the TOS, this situation isn't specifically called out in the rules. Her toon is Horde on Uther which puts 5000 Gold at a street value of about $639.45. As you can imagine this story made it to just about every WoW related forum on the web with people taking special note of the photo the poster included, especially her bangs. We all pointed, laughed, and assumed that was the end of it.

We were wrong.Very, very wrong.

Apparently some strapping young nerd took her up on the offer, threw down the loot, and got a mount of his very own. We know this because she posted a new listing on craigslist bragging about it and showing pics of her newly purchased flying epic mount. Of course it was filled with a lot of rubbing-it-in-your-face-shit and ended with these words for all her critics:

So talk all the trash you want, I got MY flying epic mount AND I got laid which is more than most of you failures can ever hope for.

I wonder what I could get for some pre-BC BOE purples I've got collecting dust in the bank?

As an old timer to the online gaming regimes, this kind of shit has been going on for years, it's just never been as public. Back in the late 90s I was admin on a text-based MUD (this was before EQ put an end to text-based games), and there was tons of "sex for stuff bartering" going on. One female player tried to sleep with as many admin as she could in hopes that we'd give her free stuff and level bumps. Another actually married the owner of the game because he promised to make her part of the admin staff.
Thinking back on it now, it's just a bunch of sick tragedy for nerds... but at the time, I sure as hell wasn't going to say no to sex in exchange for editting a couple player files to make certain female players permanently invincible. wink

Yep. UO was full of girls offering Cyber-sex or RL hook ups for better gear/levels/etc.

Awesome.

I wonder if there will be any real life legal ramifications for her actions.

i doubt it, despite people selling gold, such actions are technically against the contract of the game. There really can't be a market value decided on sex. As far as the government is concerned, she had sex with a guy and the guy gave her ingame money.

Since WoW gold has a real-life exchange rate (in this case 5K amounts to $639.45), I bet you could argue it in court. Plus, there have been rumblings from the IRS about taxing virtual property/assets - pretty lame in my opinion, but that's the IRS for you.

Pretty sure you couldn't. Despite the "exchange rate," it's still a matter of virtual, not real, money, and is thus unrecognized as property of any value.

So paying for sex is illegal but how about bartering?

There's still a lotta discussion about whether or not in-game "virtual" money has any real world value and can therefore be considered part of a trade or barter for sexual services (or any other services).
