Hideo Kojima Describes Zombie MMO Idea

Hideo Kojima has been working hard on the next installment to the Metal Gear series, but that hasn't stopped the man from pondering his next project.

It was recently reported that the acclaimed Japanese game designer had outlined an idea for a massively multilayer, online zombie game. However, if players are to take the man's idea seriously, the cost to play the game could be a hundred times that of World of Warcraft, literally.

"The zombie idea I have is a bit different. Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles... They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch! The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well," said Kojima.

The concept of using an alternate character to save a primary one could prove quite ingenious, but at what price? Imagine having to pay an extra 10 dollars for every character that is bitten by the undead. Surely, gamers can expect to have free alternates available to them at a reasonable monthly charge, but it will be interesting to see how this pans out if and when Kojima decides to further develop this idea.

I'm sure they can refine the concept a bit to be more viable. One way would be to make each account dual, ie. a zombie and a hunter character. At character creation give every player a target zombie, perhaps a loved one gone undead.

The ultimate goal of the game could be to simply find and kill that one "special" zombie, obviously finding that one zombie in a city full of zombies is going to take a very, very long time, especially if you add rpg elements like needing to find better equipement and learning your way around town.

Anf hopefully there'd be some way to not become a zombie once being bitten, ie, hacking off said limb and/or cauterizing the wound. This opens up the idea for medics, bionic limbs n' whatnot, etc.

Hell, it could work. Someone give Kojima George Romero's phone number.

That would certainly put a new twist on the usual MMO "how far along, what skills, equipment do you have?" conversations.

I'm a level sixty with only one leg and I'm missing 4 fingers on my right hand. I got movement -90% and I can only wield pistols now. I'm grinding for an eyeinjury now so I can enjoy the game in 2D

A zombie MMO could be awesome.

But not this one.

They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch!

That either sounds like a joke, or this guy is a complete asshole who should not be in charge of anything.

That's about as bright of an idea as having to pay extra per month to have more than one character in Final Fantasy Online. surreal

Well, It sounds like it has potential...
But I'm not going to pay $10 to sit around and watch people get eaten.

I could just goto seven eleven and watch crack heads do that
for free.

An Urban Dead-esque zombie MMO with graphics, greater depth of simulation, Resident Evil-style straying from realism, and that sort of thing could be very cool. But you would really either have to be able to control zombified characters or give them up entirely as they became NPCs. Paying to watch them do stuff under AI control would be utter bullshit. In fact, since the nature of the genre is a fairly high fatality rate, you'd have to earn account-wide bonuses to make it fun for very long...I mean, you might be able to maintain characters for a while if you were good enough at the game, but if there were detailed injury models and a proper zombie-human ratio (little say super zombies ala some of the nastier foes in the RE games. Nemesis, for example.), your odds would be poor. Urban Dead characters, in my experience, survived largely through the immense defensive advantage barricades grant, combined with the Necrotech serum revivals and the lack of zombie in-game coordination. Revivals absolutely shouldn't be in a regular zombie MMO, if you ask me.

Watch your zombie character attack? Pay to have another character to go kill the first? His head needs punched. ~puts on the head punching gloves~
