iPhone: Apple Reinvents the Phone

Apple has announced the real iPhone, not to be confused with the iPhone.

Following literally years of speculation and rumors, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today introduced the iPhone, a sleek all-in-one device combining a mobile phone, widescreen iPod, and internet communicator. The iPhone boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display and runs a version of Apple’s Mac OS X operating system with an innovative new user interface for using just a finger to control the device on-screen.

It comes in two capacities—4GB and 8GB—and includes support for quad-band GSM, EDGE, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR wireless technologies. The iPhone also sports a built-in 2 megapixel camera and will work with Macs or PCs. Apple’s Jobs confirmed that the exclusive carrier for the iPhone will be Cingular. iLounge.

The iPhone will be available in June ($499 = 4GB and $599 = 8GB) and was pretty much the only major announcement from Apple at this year's Macworld San Francisco. The only other items worthy of mentioning are the AppleTV (formerly known as the iTV), and 802.11n Airport Extreme.

Ohhh!! Yes! I was right to wait, to ditch my old phone...I'm definitely getting this phone in June! Bonus points because I already have -- and like my Cingular service.

Yeah. Honestly, I want to see one before I commit to it, but it seems that it's finally a phone that does everything I want a smart phone to do well, and while I'd love to find a way to get it to work with T-Mobile, I'll switch to Cingular if a method for doing that doesn't exist by June.

im not really all that impressed. the touch pad only thing is one thing, and i know that cingular is giving them an asston of money for being exclusive but i could'nt hate that decision more. if it was on an evdo network like sprint it would be tons better. but the voip posiblities are kinda cool

Because Cingular is fucking awesome, that's why!! Their weekend minutes package is revolutionary)!

Really. That's interesting. You must like your free moto razr phone that you have to replace twice a year and the 3 rate packages you got to choose from.

I hope you're being facetious!

It certainly is pretty, and the UI is enchanting.

Only supports push email from Yahoo (who still has a Yahoo email account) whatever . No support for Exchange Server or Domino, and no bundled mobile applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Without these key features, it is an expensive consumer uh...phone.

The only upside I can see is the introduction of a new platform for which Mac programmers can now begin developing applications; except, maybe not, because it's not really OS/X is it?

Sounds too much like the early days of Palm

T Mobile is CDMA. Cingular is GSM, which is another reason Apple went with them. GSM at different frequencies is the global standard, which means one chipset and one software and firmware set. If Cingular has an exclusive deal, you won't see a T mibile phone for a very long time.

not to call into question mr. jobbs' divinity or anything, but didn't LG do this first with their "Chocolate" phone?

and a touch screen phone? yeah, that looks futuristic and all, but how are you supposed to dial numbers or navigate the interface while looking away without the aid of tactile buttons?

Well, yes, I was joking a bit (and I said as much in the part you cut out). But seriously: I've never had to replace a phone, and I've never run out of minutes. Never had a problem with connections. I'm not a real big phone person, though. I've noticed that people either complain about whatever phone company they have, or they don't care one way or the other.

(I've decided to be as maniacal in my devotion to Cingular as some of the Apple-enthusiasts are over their corporation)

Cingular is not very awesome. It drops calls more than anyone! And that's even if the two people are standing right next to one another, in perfect range from the cell tower.
