iPhone: Apple Reinvents the Phone

Apple has announced the real iPhone, not to be confused with the iPhone.

Following literally years of speculation and rumors, Apple CEO Steve Jobs today introduced the iPhone, a sleek all-in-one device combining a mobile phone, widescreen iPod, and internet communicator. The iPhone boasts a 3.5-inch widescreen display and runs a version of Apple’s Mac OS X operating system with an innovative new user interface for using just a finger to control the device on-screen.

It comes in two capacities—4GB and 8GB—and includes support for quad-band GSM, EDGE, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR wireless technologies. The iPhone also sports a built-in 2 megapixel camera and will work with Macs or PCs. Apple’s Jobs confirmed that the exclusive carrier for the iPhone will be Cingular. iLounge.

The iPhone will be available in June ($499 = 4GB and $599 = 8GB) and was pretty much the only major announcement from Apple at this year's Macworld San Francisco. The only other items worthy of mentioning are the AppleTV (formerly known as the iTV), and 802.11n Airport Extreme.

4gb models = $499

8gb models = $599

Slightly cheaper than what I originally thought it would be. Your first born.

Don't forget about the 802.11n Airport Extreme.

But yeah, the "iPhone" stole the show.

Just... why Cingular? frown

I'm more excited about the airport with the usb on it for printing/storage over network; if only because I can afford it.

if it were 200 bucks cheaper it would be worth it; if/when it becomes a big hit it'll be the first *nix based mobile phone to hit the big time.

Because Motorola and Palm both have agreements with Verizon. The agreements between Palm/Motorola and Verizon provide exclusive marketing to Verizon for 6-months, forcing Cingular to miss out on early market entry for high-end phones. Cingular offered very aggressive incentives to Apple to secure this deal.

Because Cingular is fucking awesome, that's why!! Their weekend minutes package is revolutionary)! Fuck Sprint and Verizon!

(I've decided to be as maniacal in my devotion to Cingular as some of the Apple-enthusiasts are over their corporation)

I understand the mechanics behind it, I'm just bitching. wink

Cingular's EDGE is the slowest "high speed" data network out there. I was cheering for the underdog Sprint, and their super fast EVDO.

fucking cingular. I would get one if it weren't for the fact that the last time i tried to sign up for cingular's service they wanted a $700 deposit. and since im not forking over more than a grand for a phone that won't blow me, i aint gettin it.

I'm just really glad that now all the goddamn crazy rumours will die down.

Also very glad that back of the phone is not shiny stainless steel like an iPod... that'd be scratched to death in 24 hours as a phone...

(now, the first person to figure out how to make it work on Tmobile, without waiting for apple to add tmobile as a carrier... yeah... lemme know. I love my blackberry, but damn...)

And? It's the cockroach debate: There are billions more cockroaches on the earth than humans. Numbers alone do not denote a higher form of life.

All that being "the largest commercial data carrier" means is that more people in more places nationwide will be able to get mediocre cellular service.
