Marvel, EA Sign Game Deal

Late last week, Electronic Arts (the Sims, Medal of Honor) announced it had entered into a deal with Marvel comics to create a new series of fighting games. Over 100 Marvel characters are planned to be included in the games, including favorites Spider-Man and the X-Men.

EA has never been known for their fighting titles, and Marvel has had mixed results with video games based on it's characters in the past, so it will be interesting to see how their joint efforts turn out.

This contract is said not to affect Marvel's previous licensing arrangement with Activision, because this new deal only covers the fighting genre.

Get your nose out of that comic book, drop the controller, and read more here.

I liked the Mutant Academy fighting games on the Playstation. You could be Nightcrawler, which always rocks my world.

From Gamespot:

Marvel versus EA on the cards

EA and Marvel Enterprises announce a deal that will see Marvel superheroes battling new EA heroes in upcoming fighting games.

Electronic Arts and Marvel Enterprises have today announced a deal that will see EA developing fighting games that pit superheroes from the Marvel universe against new EA heroes. Under the multiyear agreement, EA has also granted Marvel the exclusive rights, as worldwide licensing agent, to all consumer products and media licensing for the new EA hero characters. Marvel already has plans to publish comic books introducing the EA characters in the future.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for EA to create new characters for fighting games that can be exploited through our global merchandise licensing machine to fuel sales in many other product categories," said Allen Lipson, president and CEO of Marvel Enterprises.

While it will be nice to see the new Marvel games come out from EA (who does make good games)...one game they have planned is Marvel vs EA...Marvel vs EA...

Can anyone tell me who the hell will be on EA's side? Well we know who will win a match between Cyclops and "Some EA no name." Sorry if I don't sound all too thrilled with this, but I just really can't see this game really as anything....well, good. In fact, it seems to me to be one of the worse ideas I heard in the video game industry today.

*Thinks about Dual Screen*

Ok, maybe not that bad...but still not that great. But it just seems like a dumb idea to me from the story I read...in fact, that Yahoo story sounded a lot better and more interesting.

God, I just miss the Capcom versions...now those were great.

Yeah, why couldnt they just make Marvel vs Capcom 3?
I guess Capcom's got its plate full with its Sammy (Guilty GeaR) and SNK (King of Fighters) collaboration... still, who wouldnt profit from a Capcom vs Marvel vs SNK vs Sammy slugfest?? love
apart from that, the Penny Arcade newspost expresses my sentiments exactly.

On a side note, I hate hate hate hate (did I mention hate?) EA because of the way they mangled, brutalized, murdered, and then proceeded to rape the carcass of Ultima, the holiest of all game licenses ever created... but mayeb thats just me.

this is relatively unrelated, but yeah, game designers need to do a better job with special characters. i suppose my only argument for this at all is soul caliber II, because on PS2 heihachi sucks really, really bad, and on xbox spawn is kinda cool, i guess... but i mean, how can you have link for gamecube, and then NOT put cloud in for playstation and master chief in for xbox?

end random tangent.
