Rip DVDs to your Mac with "HandBrake"

Want to rip DVDs to your Mac and take your movies with you? Or maybe make iPod video ready files. Trying a number of different ripping apps, but no luck? Then check out freeware app HandBrake. It does one thing really well. Makes DVDs into nice manageable mp4's all ready to watch on the laptop or iPod. A 2 hour feature takes about an hour to rip, and makes a file of about 5-8 hundred megs depending on length of movie and your import settings.

My move is to load a few DVDs onto the MacBook before taking a trip. Having a drive full of good stuff to watch is like gold in the hopeless purgatory of the airport waiting room.

So give it a try - it works great and is freeware. At the moment there are Mac and Linux versions with the Windows version coming.

And if you want to tag the resulting MP4s properly, there's Lostify. iTunes doesn't show you all the tags when you go to edit the info.

I'm glad a windows version is coming out. I have DVDShrink, but frankly its not very manageable, and carrying around 4-8gig ISOs on my harddisk gets old. mp4 plays in Quicktime, right? I don't have iTunes and will never have iTunes, so I hope that's not the case.

How is this a story? This has been out for a LONG time, not to mention there is a Windows version, it's just very, very basic at the moment.

Not to mention the story talks about the time it takes to rip and convert, which varies greatly, depending on the capabilities of your computer.

If you're running Windows (it's hard to tell from your post), there are quite a few different media apps that will play .mp4, including but not limited to, Media Player Classic, VLC Player, and BSPlayer. Hell, Windows Media Player probably does, but I haven't used that trainwreck in years.

I remember hearing about this quite some time ago but I didn't know there was a Linux version. Good to know, I guess.

or get mac the ripper and then use something like MPEG Streamclip (which is free but relies on a $25 quicktime plugin from apple) and then you can encode them to whatever the shit you want.

not just a useless mp4 but also a nice codec that you can edit or reauthor with.

It doesn't convert copyright protected discs though.

Still a great program but!

I've been using this for a while, I was scepticle about watchin movies on my iPod but now I always have a dozen or so films to watch, I travel a lot, planes and trains mostly and it certainly makes the journey pass more quickly....as an aside I highly reccommend the Bang and Olufsen earpiece headphones, I have tried most on the market with my iPod and these have the best bass and sound quality I have heard despite not being noise cancelling.

...So...Mac only NOW gets a decent DVD ripper that will encode to mp4?

*looks at his various Windows rippers and encoders and stifles a small laugh*

*Then realizes he admitted to having Windows while being an Linux supporter*
