Gears of War, easily the most anticipated Xbox360 game this side of Halo 3 was shown to lucky gamers last week at The Match Made in Hell, a four-city Gears preview held after a showing of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre : The Beginning. The preview and game play are drawing almost unanimously rave reviews from the fanboy faithful in attendance. No, not fainting or a riot, but pretty damn close.
Gears of War is first person shooter with heavy horror and team game play elements. The games lush graphics and the recent announcement that it would support multiplayer game play brought Gears of War's anticipation level to a fever pitch.
The game means much more to Microsofts Xbox360 platform than your average holiday season title. When the Xbox360 launched in November of last year, it drew criticism for not being a large enough step graphically from the original Xbox to warrant the Next Generation moniker. By default, Gears has inherited the responsibility of being the first true Xbox360 next generation title, the first to really use the 360s full processing horsepower. With Novembers release of Nintendos groundbreaking Wii console, and Sonys controversy-plagued PS3, the need for the 360 to shine has never been more vital for Microsoft.
Will Gears cement the 360s strong lead on competitors Sony and Nintendo in the current phase of the console wars, or will it end up being just another FPS death orgy? Well know soon enough; Gears of War goes on sale November 7th.
oblivion. I could waste eternity playing that game. besides its always a year or so before good games start coming out for new consoles.
Oh, I dunno if you ever played system shock 1 or 2 but the creators are coming out with bioshock. Id pay $600 just to play that game. system shock 2 made me almost piss my pants i was so scared and the lights were on! So bioshock should be incredible (and non linear too)
I hate how people can only get hyped up about the next GTA or war game. I miss the cartoony, off the wall stuff. If I get a system, I guess I'll get a Wii.

I am assuming by strong lead you mean North America? Which in overall terms of market is still much smaller than Asia where the console wars are truly decided and where the 360 is currently selling worse than the original xbox did. If the xbox is not able to pick up sales in Asia as they said they would need to they have already stated there may not be another xbox console made as they will never be able to compete without an Asain market base.
um, console wars are decided in the us and europe. asia has become an incredibly distant third in number of sales. i don't know what they you're talking about, but microsoft hasn't shown any signs of leaving the console business. they've never said they need asia; they've said asia is important, which they need to say to woo japanese developers to make games that sell more copies in north america than anywhere else on the planet.
I have been excited by the game. It looks like a great title to come out this year. Will it beat out Oblivion? Probably not, but I am sure Epic knows what they are doing with this game.

If I can find you the Quote where they explicitley stated that if they could not get a market in Asia and get better sales there they may not make another console I will post it for you. I read it awhile ago so will do some seluthing to see if I can find it again.
I always assumed that NA was the bigger market, but from the tone of the past few articles I have read about both Xbox and PS3, Asia while lower in sales seems to be where the bigger war is going on and where people are trying to gain the more sales thus why I mentioned the fight right now is for Asia.
Just noticed I mistyped what I meant to say in my original post Meant not to say it was a bigger market but where the battle for the market is right now.
By "Lead", the writer was probably referring to the fact that the 360 was the first of the three systems to be released. Microsoft therefore has the lead as neither of its competitors have even entered the race yet.
Steve does, after all, refer to one specific phase rather than overall sales including the PS2, Gamecube, and XBOX generation.
oh, and sony themselves have essentially conceded the point that japan is no longer the primary market for their console: there are 400,000 consoles for the american launch, and 100,000 for japan. the war for asia is a mindshare war, and a mindshare war that's being marginalized further by japanese developer's desire to sell more units to western audiences.
the game looks pretty whack, just like a bad cliche of every tom clancy game, 'just cause' is the only thing i got worth playing really saints row was good for like half an hour same as with dead rising. only really looking forward to marvel 'ultimate alliance' and 'pro evo 6' now
Ever since the last generation of consoles I haven't been much of a gamer. I'm a PC Gamer and since then there haven't been many good PC titles. The franchises we used to have, they've mostly left for the consoles, and as a result become different types of games or just rehash after rehash. I'd love to get excited over Bioshock or something, but even that is going to be an X360 title as well. Past experience has taught me not to get too excited over certain games that also come out on consoles. (like Deus Ex 2, Theif 3, etc...)
Games just generally aren't that much fun for me anymore. Maybe I've just gotten older.
That said, there have been a few ports I've loved, and I still have a soft spot for a lot of Nintendo things.
