Wii Launches Nov 19th at $250

Tags: Wii, Nintendo

At long last we can finally put all the pricing and launch date rumors to rest. While Nintendo won't make an official US announcement until their press conference on Thursday, the New York Times is reporting the Wii will launch on November 19th, just in time for the holidays. Despite hopeful reports that the console would less for under $200, the true price rings in at $250. Compared to the PS3, which ships out just a few days prior to the Wii, the price is still a solid few hundred cheaper.

"Our goal is to bring gaming back to the masses," Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, said in a telephone interview. "You see that in our pricing, you see that in the number of units we plan to make available this year and you see that in how we are positioning the Wii to appeal to every member of the household, including but not limited to the hard-core gamer."

According to the article, Nintendo plans to announce a sports game bundle, WiiSports, that will be included in every Wii purchase to show off the full potential of the console's innovative controls. I seriously cannot wait to play these games. Having had the opportunity to play the Wii at E3 this year, I can honestly say it is exceptionally fun. The potential for party play is so great. And think of the fat kids out there! Exercise while gaming, yet not having to rely on DDR! Bonus! Games, likely 25-30 launching this year, are said to be priced at $50 a piece. And the highly anticipated Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will indeed be available by end of year.

In a bit of a twist, the Wii is said to have web capabilities so one can browse the Internet via their television.

"We are including all of these capabilities as part of our overall strategy to expand the gaming market," Fils-Aime said. "Broadening the market is important because it will breathe new life into this business. Otherwise, this industry is moving down a path of being more and more limited to the hard-core gamer."

November 19th. Let the countdown begin!

yeah, that's my only reservation about the, uh, new Nintendo system (sorry, i refuse to call it the Wii). As much as I've been a Sony fan in the past, the PS3's pricing range is just rediculous. Either way, I'd rather have a (possibly) revolutionary controller, internet access, and cheap or free downloadable games than pay $600 for a system, just because it has SuperHDBluDVD capabilities. Besides, when was the last time you heard of a company giving away games with it's console? Oh, right....SNES.

Besides, I'm sure Nintendo has/will have a familiar controller alternative.

I saw some pics of a SNES style controller that had analog sticks on it that you can use instead of the Wii-mote. I'm not sure if it has been confirmed or not.

Actually, that's the one you can use for when you download the older games (NES, N64, etc).

Gay ass magic wand controller or not, I'm still stoked as hell about a new nintendo system that, in my opinion, will live up to what it used to be. And the price aint too shabby neither.

It makes me sad that it won't have HD output. My concern is will it be region specific? If not, I will buy one in Japan in a few weeks.
