GarageBand plus MySpace equals SpliceMusic.com

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 14 2006 1:00 PM

SpliceMusic.com is a website that combines the social elements of MySpace spliced with Apple GarageBand software like capabilities. The site grants users the ability to produce, mix, and listen to music all within a web browser with no additional software required.

When asked about what the hell SpliceMusic actually is, CEO Wendell Davis III stated:

If Apple's GarageBand, MySpace and Creative Commons all bought each other drinks, then came back to MySpace's place and made sweet love on the plush couch, Splice would be the love child.

It's a mashup community -- it basically embraces all of the "infinite album" concepts that a lot of artists are really on about right now -- you can make music right there on the site, you can remix it right there on the site -- EVERYTHING is remixable, everything is fluid and able to mash into everything else. We designed it that way.

As Wendell alluded, Splice uses Creative Commons licensing for all the content site members create. This means that users actually still own their content.

While the site is still in its infancy, it is still worthy of being checked out.

i have been into open-source collaborative art for years and years, so it's great to see an effort like this take off. i think as projects such as this gain more traction, the shackles binding intellectual property in a paranoid deathgrip will ease and subside, at least a bit. yay! ooo aaa

if you feel like this is a losing battle and that only wee ones are doing this sort of thing, take an encouraging glance at the Brian Eno / David Byrne CC / mashup re-release of My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts:

What, stunned by another case of "technology" giving "amateurs" the ability to produce work that "should be left to professionals" because of the amount of "crap" that is likely to be produced? wink

This, by the way, is pretty awesome, if it works as well as the hype suggests.
