It's Showtime For Apple!

At this point it's all still rumors, at least until 10:00am today when Apple CEO Steve Jobs is set to reveal a few new products. Invitations were sent out to select members of the press with the Apple logo and words, "It's Showtime". Needless to say, there has been much speculation as to what is coming our way today.

After several hoaxes Apple is finally expected to make a new iPod announcement, possibly a Widescreen model complete with virtual touchwheel. Considering the amount of fanboy photoshopped images that have circulated about in recent while, it's about time the widescreen model be released.

Next up is the launch of the iTunes movie store, which has been very much in the spotlight these past weeks, especially after the unveiling of Amazon's not so awesome toward mac users Unbox video download service. Users will be able to purchase various Disney and Pixar movies in two formats: an iPod optimized version priced at $9.99 and a standard version at $14.99 a movie. No word on other movie studios joining in the initial launch. Do note that the iTunes music store is currently down at the moment.

Now for the new revelation, and biggest rumor of them all! According to TUAW, Apple will be announcing "TubePort", a device to allow the streaming of video from one's mac to their television via a USB dongle. Is there not a better word for "dongle"? I mean seriously, it just reminds me of, well, I'll leave that up to your imagination. The TubePort set would be priced at $99. This seems a likely product, but the name TubePort? It doesn't sound like it came from an Apple mind. It doesn't flow. Maybe iTube? iStream?

Well, the UK iTunes Music Store is now down (the usual Apple call-sign for major product revisions) as i type this although i find it quite hard to believe that the UK will be included in any movie download service plans considering we still don't even have TV Shows yet.

Apple sneaked those out the back door last week without much of a word to anyone really, they're available to buy now from the Apple Store and from Apple retailers.

if they release a nice little box so i can stream video as easily as i stream audio now with my airport express, i'll be a happy man. other than that though i think my credit card will have to remain holstered, even though i have no doubt i'll want whatever shiny new product they release.

Heh, it gets bad when you start logging into #macrumours on irc.macrumourslive.com for live text commentary of an event hours before it even kicks off.

So they'll offer some movies I probably don't want at the same overinflated price Amazon is. Hopefully less DRM'ed, at least. (I might possibly consider paying ten bucks, but not for a version sized for an iPod screen.)

I like download services conceptually, but they really need to have prices that reflect the lower value of what you're getting, or they need to have content that is every bit as valuable as the physical version (I.e., quit with all the DRM and include the sort of extras you might find on a DVD version, let you burn yourself copies, and allow you to resell the license. Not to mention being of similar or superior quality to begin with.)

Either that or they need to offer services that are impossible in the old, physical model of doing things. I have no doubt that the iTunes Music Store sells plenty of albums, but I suspect it's the ability to buy the track or tracks you actually liked off an album without getting the whole thing that makes it truly popular.

Yeah, for once I actually agree with Malkav. Downloadable content is fundamentally inferior to what you get on DVD (not to mention the new HD formats), so I'm personally not convinced the convenience of downloading instantly justifies the premium. I'll keep buying DVDs and ripping them until they're significantly cheaper. I'm a friggin bonus material nut. There's no way I'm spending $9.99 for just the movie.
