That's right, cracker. Not hacker. Oh, you silly journalists, please stop enabling the misuse of hacker. A hacker hacks together code, while a cracker cracks into a supposedly secure network/server/etc. Now with that out of the way, the sentencing of a 23 year old cracker was held on Monday in Los Angeles. Nicholas Lee Jacobsen, previously of Santa Ana, California, was sentenced to a year of house detention. No word on whether he was also banned from computer access in true Zero Cool fashion.
In 2004, Jacobsen cracked into the T-Mobile network, accessing the personal information of 400 customers. One of which was Special Agent Peter Cavicchia, of the Secret Service. Clearly poor choice to mess with, Jacobsen was able to read through sensitive materials the Agent accessed through his Sidekick. No investigations were jeopardized.
"I did some very stupid things," Jacobsen told U.S. District Judge George King at his sentencing Monday in Los Angeles.
Yes, I'd have to agree. I mean, if you really need to flex those 1337 muscles, at least avoid messing with members of the Secret Service.
In addition to a year of home detention, Jacobsen must also pay $10,000 to T-Mobile to cover losses by his antics. The maximum sentence one could face for this crime is 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Thankfully, Jacobsen's youth and lack of sound decision making skills aided in his case.
