EVE Online Community Robbed of 700 Billion ISK

Surprisingly popular MMOG (Massive Multiplayer Online Game) EVE Online is making headlines this week as it seems a large group of players have once again been duped, scammed, and fooled into parting with billions of in-game currency. After many months of plotting a small group of devious bankers were able to make off with over 700 Billion “Isk” that if sold on Ebay could fetch around $119,000 USD. That’s one hundred and nineteen thousand bits of cold hard American cash for scamming space nerds.

Recently on the forums it seems a single person named “Dentara Rast” is attempting to take sole credit for this grand heist

Not one person who supported the EIB, worked for the EIB, or was involved in anyway with the EIB was aware of my intentions.

I fooled everyone.

I win EVE.

Indeed you do, Mr. Rast. Indeed you do. Perhaps you could use all of that virtual currency to buy a fetching young bride from Russia or finance your own intergalactic revolution. Well played.

Hilariously, this is not the first time such an intergalactic scheme has taken place in EVE. Many months ago there was a bloodier coup that resulted in $16,500 worth of space booty boosted.

EVE is one of many MMO’s attempting to get a piece of the online game pie and part of the allure stems from these occasional scams resulting in thousands of real life currency. To make matters worse, or better depending on how cold and dead your hear may be, the diabolical developers are infamous for sitting back and letting these battles unfold naturally and via the will of the galactic masses. I myself dabbled in the game for a couple weeks and as an image conscience man of style, I couldn’t get past an entire universe of people resembling Borg-like Germans face raped by wrenches.

i really miss playing eve, but wow was more entertaining and i could only afford one mmorpg. this sounds exactly like something my corporation would do, too. i actually prefer that the developers don't come in and interfere with the game and instead encourage the game's open-ended nature. this is the perfect game for pirates and this kind of shit happens daily, but this is the biggest bit of plundering i've ever seen on the game.

of course, there's no way i'd ever trust another player with my ISK. hell, even the courier missions and open market are blatent extortion.

ugh, maybe i'll find a way to get the extra $15 a month to play again. i'm really itching to prowl low security space in my battle cruiser now.

I would have enjoyed EVE more if the combat was more wing commander-styled (kinda why I tried Vendetta Online for awhile). but the scenery was breathtaking.

Ouch.... I feel sorry for the space nerds though...

Yeah, I remember reading about the story you linked to and thinking how awesome that was. This kind of thing is really cool, and I'm glad that the developers don't try to stop it. Though the only difference is that since people don't have to face any real punishment for doing this (since they can always just make a new character and transfer funds) it probably could get very annoying to some people. It would be best if there was some ingame way to counter this.

Still, it makes for great sounding stories.

OK, YOU'RE TOTALY WRONG FOR A START, i play eve alot, and it was 1 person with a few alt accounts who scammed quite a few people out of their isk, i wasn't one of the people because i only invest in people who are trustworthy, sure, the people who i work with could scam me but what's the point? they'd have alot of money and eventually it would run out and they'd have to make money like any other player. The people i work with can use my investments to help multiply their money at a decent and well off rate to make some money without scamming me and continue to do this untill the end of time.

and you can say it's worth so and so dollahs but if he ever tried to do that it would get stopped instantly and his billions of isk would become worthless within seconds. The smartest thing he could do is to reinvest it into the system he exploited (into a few different schemes incase he himself ran into a scam himself). The dividends from such shares that he could buy could give between 4% and 10%, and investing 700bill would give him between 40bill and 70bill a month, which is more than enough to live the easiest life ever on eve.
Elite implants that give insane stats (such as insane speed on certain ships) cost 2bill for a full set (you lose thme when you die) would be like tooth picks to him, he'd be able to buy them so many times every month, where as most players who use them quit the game if they die with them (for yous in game, snake implants omg (i've got some myself lawl) ).

if you need eve info, ask me, i'd be alot more informative than the arsehole who wrote this. :p

And oddly enough, this makes me wanna give EVE a try even more.

I like the idea of a good intergalactic scamming/smuggling/pirating operation. This whole deal just makes the 'verse seem so much cooler and alive to me.

*types a slightly horrendously scathing paragraph then wipes it*

I've never understood how anyone would consider buying money in a computer game with money in real life. As far as I'm concerned it's right up there with everything in Hollywood, save the music portion of the industry. People that get scammed out of not-money should be glad it didn't happen with money-money.

It's even less tangible than monopoly money, people! If you're really so bored and rich, almost anything you could do with your time and money would be better spent!

I experimented with Eve, loved the story (and the music), but the gameplay didn't grab me. I wanted to be able to get out of the ship and go watch one of those mind-controlled holographic tournaments or something. I guess it was a combination of quitting SWG and getting Firefly on DVD...

In any case, letting people get scammed is consistant with the atmosphere of the game.
