For years, when a friend has made the courageous statement of "Mmm, I want a Hot Dog", I've half jokingly pointed out that they cause cancer. Well, a new study has found that the melange of preservatives, chemical additives and of course, miscellaneous and random animal parts (mmm beaks) that make up the hot dog may increase one's risk of cancer.

Researcher Sidney Mirvish, a chemist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, began the study after prior research linked the popular ball park snack with colon cancer.

Extracts from hot dogs bought from the supermarket, when mixed with nitrites, resulted in what appeared to be these DNA-mutating compounds. When added to Salmonella bacteria, hot dog extracts treated with nitrites doubled to quadrupled their normal DNA mutation levels. Triggering DNA mutations in the gut might boost the risk for colon cancer, the researchers explained.

Mirvish did make it clear that further investigation is needed to solidify the findings, and noted the risk is not just in hot dogs, but also "salted dried fish and seasonings such as soy sauce may contain similar levels of these chemicals".

With a name like Sidney Mirvish he was destined to become a scientist. I can't read that name without it being said in the voice of Professor Frink.

That said ... I'll take a little cancer rather than give up chili cheese dogs.

This is just unfair. After years of bratwurst, I have rediscovered the joy of a good hot dog. I will risk cancer for the sake of Nathan's Famous hot dogs.

Since cancer is coming to get me, I might as well eat all the hot dogs I can.

Oh god plz NO , it's not soy everything is it ?

I would cry some tears just for soy sauce and its sweet and salty goodness. But all soy product ? no, no. That can't be. There definitely should be more studies then !

Everything you eat can now cause cancer. Hell, breathing L.A. air can cause cancer. Driving your car causes cancer. We can't live without increasing our chances of cancer. So what, eating a hot dog and soy sauce can cause cancer. I'm gonna eat my damn hot dogs and if I get cancer, I'll know that if it wasn't from the hot dogs it would be from something else. AND, if you have never had a Pinks hot dog, you havn't lived.
