360 Backwards Compatibility Back at the Forefront

Despite unsubstantiated claims from Peter Moore, (the Corporate VP of Interactive Entertainment Business in the E&D Division at Microsoft), bringing original Xbox games to the 360 is still on the go.

"Nobody is concerned anymore about backwards compatibility. We under promised and over delivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible."

The list of supported older games grew today by 27. Most notable include LEGO Star Wars, Spider-Man and Big Mutha Truckers. Alright, alright--I just threw that last one in for fun. Star Wars Battlefront is said to be updated, but I could have sworn that one already had an update, since I had it at my place last week. Booya!

Xbox 360 Dashboard also had a tiny update this morning, but Confucius say: there really wasn't anything new added, unless you're using the localized Chinese language version.

Still don't think 360 is worth it.

I still want Kingdom Under Fire and Prince of Persia II and III to work on the 360. Though Doom 3, LEGO Star Wars and Dreamfall are nice touches.

That still leaves out something like three quarters of my games, mostly the ones I would actually want to play on the 360. Like Otogi (and sequel), Mercenaries, Panzer Dragoon Orta, the X-Men Legends games, the Kingdom Under Fire games, the first BG: Dark Alliance, Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams, Shenmue II, Soul Calibur II, Tenchu: Return to Darkness, Burnout 3....

I'm pleased that they plan to continue adding games, but to call their backwards compatibility other than absurdly half-assed...well, it just wouldn't be true.

Sweet Silent Hill 4 made the list. I'm now one step closer to throwing away my xbox. As soon as Forza 2 comes out it's gone.

As more 360 games arrive, I find myself caring less about backward compatibility. Yes, it would be awesome to see Panzer Dragoon Orta in 720p, but with Oblivion, Hitman: Blood Money and Ghost Recon out now, plus titles coming soon such as Gears of War and Enchanted Arms I am more excited about new content as opposed to old.

I went through the same phase with my PS2- At first, there were no games for it so I'd marvel at how GT2 looked with moderate texture smoothing. Once PS2 content came along, I never put a PS1 game in my system again.

My long winded point: Once next generation content really fills up the shelves, no one will give a shit about backward compatibility.

The lesson to be learned: Don't throw out your original Xbox if you get a 360.

Well, I'm still playing SNES and PSX games today. I wasn't a gamer when they were out. And between the backlog and all the new stuff coming out every day, I would not be at all surprised to find myself with original Xbox games left to play five years into the 360's lifespan.

But more to the point: If I could have sold my Xbox and run all my Xbox games on a 360, I'd be much closer to being able to buy one. In fact, I might already have one. By the time I'll be able to afford one now, the Revolution will be out. I don't guarantee that I'd necessarily choose Nintendo's console over Microsoft's, but if they'd been on the ball with backwards compatibility, it wouldn't be a question, because I'd have my 360 and my Revolution too.

when all's said and done, i figure that a little more than a third of the original xbox library will be playable. it's obvious this isn't a priority, according to moore, and MS is probably counting on the clamoring for it to dwindle a bit over time.

in some ways, MS shouldn't have even bothered with BC. yeah, SOME games might be better than NONE (even if it's complete crap like most of the BC titles), but most people expected more than this, or at least expected a lot more good games. it's pretty clear to see that they've focused on a few key titles; around 150+ were probably just inclusions that came along easy with the work they did. quantity is not better than quality in this case.

there are a few games that would make a LOT of people happy if they were BC - PDO, phantom dust, JSRF, SFAC, conker, riddick, etc. but a lot of these use pretty complex engines, so who knows if there's any hope.

Yeah, the ability to play Gamecube games will go some ways towards convincing me to take the plunge for a Wii. I still play my Super Nintendo and N64, but I just never got around to buying a Gamecube. Due to the low price of Gamecubes (especially used), I'm tempted to buy one. But if Wiis will play Gamecube games anyways, I might just save up.

The other thing is: proper backwards compatibility would mean I only needed one console per console company. As long as the number of mainstream console companies remains fairly low, that's a manageable amount of consoles. If they do the Xbox thing and fuck it up, that means I have to keep every console in that line in order to play the damned games that I paid for, and that gets unwieldy fast. I have four consoles right now, and that's pretty well pushing it. If the Gamecube and Dreamcast weren't small...well..
