AOL and WB Join Forces in The Matrix

Support for the AOL Instant Messaging service (AIM) will be included in the upcoming Matrix Online. The Warner Brothers Interactive game, due for release later this year, will utilize AIM in an attempt to further blur the line between the virtual world and the real world.

"Bringing AOL's expansive instant messaging technology to The Matrix Online will tremendously enhance the massively multi-player gaming experience," said Warner's Jason Hall. "Players will now be able to alert other players, via the Internet or their phones, to join them on missions in The Matrix Online and will be able to talk freely while in combat or searching for answers."

Massivly Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) such as Everquest have drawn fire from parental groups who consider thier virtual worlds and communities to be harmfully addictive. One can only imagine what they will have to say about this.

Umm, if I'm out of the game and on AIM, there's probably a reason. I'm sure that in a persistant MMORPG there would be stuff to pay attention to 24 hours a day, I don't need constant reminders of what I'm missing.

I'm all for the blurring of lines. That game a couple years ago, Majestic, that would call you in the middle of the night and threaten your loved ones by name was an awesome concept, even if the game sucked.

Still, I don't think I need an endless game constantly asking me why I'm not playing it at the moment.

Guys, come on. I think Monolith is a great company and all, and I loved the first Matrix as much as the next guy and even gave the second one some doubts, but after that trilology ending.. is there anyone here, at all, that REALLY wants to play the Matrix MMRPG? Seriously. I damn near came home and deleted anything i had referring to the Matrix. It became un-cool even to the uncool - it used to be lame in that "Sound like Yoda voice" way, then it turned lame in that "Everyone but the fanboys agree, it's a steaming pile of horse shit."

I have never seen a sequal wreck a franchise so badly. Aliens lived through it.. people could ignore the third one. Star Wars even lived through the Pre-quals - noone hates the originality trilolgy. But Matrix.. I'm sorry.. the 2nd one left people a little cold and then the 3rd one just outright OBLITERATED the series. I don't even think I could stand to watch the first one without getting terrible flashbacks.

Though I'll admit, guiltily, I have the soundtrack to the third one but only because I really like Juno Reactor and Don Davis is cool too. It's not their fault they wound up in such a POS movie.

it's just a sneaky way of getting more people to use aim, if it is indeed necessary to have people team up with you to complete some missions then you could just as easily message someone on your MSN or Yahoo lists, they just want to stick AIM in the game so everyone who buys the matrix online starts using AIM. clever marketing, but nothing actually useful.

What Bad_Scott said. Majestic was an incredible concept, just... slightly lacking.

This doesn't sound very appealing to me but I would like to see how well it is received.

Honestly? Yeah, if it can live up to what the developers are promising. The chance to run around in a huge persistant city and get to use reality-bending powers to fly around the city and use wacky kung-fu on agents and cops? Of course! Hell, even Enter The Matrix was cool when it wasn't being fucked in the ass by its unbelievably awful control scheme. I guess I'm imagining something like Oni but on steroids.

Still, I have serious doubts that this game is going to actually be anything other than really lame.
