Nintendo Announces Wii Price

After an impressive debut at E3, Nintendo has announced that the Wii system, scheduled for a fourth quarter release, will sell for no more than $250USD. I would personally like to thank Nintendo for releasing a system I may actually be able to afford without sacrificing a month of eating anything besides top ramen. With pricepoints becoming increasingly ridiculous, it is refreshing to see such a solid product without a $600 price tag.

Nintendo plans to ship 6 million consoles between its launch date and March 2007, a figure similar to Sony's target for PS3 sales. The company also has plans to sell 17 million Wii games over the same period.

I had the opportunity to play the questionably named Wii at E3 this year, and it very much stole the show. I was skeptical until I actually had a controller in my hand, trying to run a 2d man through an obstacle course. If they had injuries in the game, he'd have been in a full body cast by the time I was through. The controller was incredibly sensitive, something to remember to tell your friends when they're swinging around a lightsaber and breaking your furniture.

I'm just glad to see Nintendo finally got their heads around the whole backwards-compatability concept.

I haven't used Nintendo hardware in, well, a very long time. I'm happy with the 360 right now, but I'll admit that the Wii has captured my curiosity. I'm particularly interested in the possibility of incoporating the new controller's capabilities in games like Oblivion--which I thought suffered in 1st person point of view from the limited fighting options.
