Sony says $600 Is Too Cheap for PS3

Since it was announced that the PS3 would have Blu-Ray technology, adjust the time continuum, deflect low-powered lazers, and dispense hot soup, everyone was speculating at exactly how much the fucking thing would have to cost. For a long time, all we got was that it would be "expensive."

Now the head of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi, has said that $600 is "probably too cheap." Here are his (sort of) exact words, as translated by IGN

"Is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant? It's a question of what you can do with that game machine. If you can have an amazing experience, we believe price is not a problem."

Thanks, Ken. You tell us that SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS is reasonable to pay for a video game system, and then you help our tiny brains wrap around that concept with some clumsy analogy to food. You're on the right track since our buttery American brains don't process information unless it's directly compared to food, but maybe you could take a couple of flux capacitors out of the thing and get the manufacturing cost down to something affordable.

The high price is especially bad news for my roommate since with the addition of the PS3 and its peripherals, the next time he gets drunk and falls into my entertainment center it will cost him over 19 million dollars.

Kutaragi is firm that there will be 2 million units at launch this fall, four million by year-end, and six million by March of next year. Even if that's true, and don't count on it, you can count on more than that number of people camping outside Best Buy for the privilige of paying whatever Sony wants.

It's clear, now that the dust has settled, that Sony came in 3rd out of the big three at this year's E3. But going after them for the price point is pointless, imho; didn't the beefy version of the 360 launch for the same amount?

I know, right? You give a kid a GameCube, and suddenly they think they can walk all over you for every console under the sun. Why, in my day we had Duck Hunt graphics and we LIKED it!

(She'll probably get a Wii though, because I'm a sucker. blackeyed )

Nope, $499, and he said 600 was too cheap, which means it would be more..

F that I say, I have better things to spend my money on... and unless that thing gives great head while you play it, and dose your laundry and go's to work for you I don't care how cool the games are... They will all take about a day to beat anyways (and probably cost 100 bucks to boot).

We have the premium package xbox - it was about $430. Thats considerably cheaper than 600 for the ps3. Plus i know the online network with xbox is top notch.... as for sony... well we will see.

For $600 you can get her between 100 and 120 packs of smokes. tongue

The decision is clear.

600 bucks, nothing much more than a load of pretty sequels, a controller that looks exactly like PS2's (that looked exactly like PS1's...), and a...tilt whatever ...function built in that sounds about as much fun as the pressure-sensitive buttons on the PS2. I traditionally get all the systems to feed this gaming addiction of mine, but Sony really seems less and less interesting everytime they open their mouths. Especially when they're telling me what is and isn't cheap--thank you billion dollar corporation for explaining /that/ one to me.

Oh, and seriously, this whole tacked-on tilt function has got to go. If it actually did what Wii's controller did then at least it'd be somewhat excusable (yet still lowdown and dirty), but this tilting stuff does just that and only that---it can sense tilting. I hope in Ken's next interview he tells me why tilting stuff is the future of gaming.

Not Just a Gaming System anymore Moron. Its much more than that...if you don't want to pay it just wait till the price drops, the PS2s price dropped pretty rapidly.

Indeed, the PS3 will be far more than a game machine. Imagine, if you will, a NeoGeo crossbred with a Betamax player. It's uber-expensive, and you can play movies in a "superior" format that no one else supports. Added bonus, it can't read any of the DVDs you already own.

Seriously, I can't bear to hold in the excitement.
