Sony Says PS3 Price Leak is Incorrect

FRIDAY APRIL 7 2006 6:00 AM

Submitted by WilWheaton. Edited By WilWheaton.

Sony is a little concerned that news of Project Take Out A Second Mortgage to Buy PS3 spread around the Internets with Mahir-like intensity and All Your Base-like saturation, and someone took Georges Fornay, who was quoted in the widely-published articles, behind the woodshed for a little talk.

Georges Fornay, says he was "misunderstood" when he appeared to indicate a price range for the PS3 during an interview with French radio station Europe 1 this week.

But this seems like one of those infamous non-denial denials:

According to the SCEE, Fornay was simply saying the PS3 would cost more than most current videogame consoles, which are priced well below €500, but would still be much cheaper than standalone Blu-ray Disc players. The PS3 will, of course, operate as such a device.

I guess it depends on what your definition of "outrageously fucking expensive" is. This like saying that something which costs $49.95 is "under fifty dollars." Sure, it's technically true, but doesn't exactly correct the guy who said "Yeah, it's about fifty bucks."

This just looks like Sony is racing to get out a quick official announcement so they can attempt to contain the story before it turns into yet even more bad publicity for a company that has certainly earned its fair share in the last twelve months.

In a late-breaking development, Fornay reportedly farted in the general direction of the Internet rumors, before proclaiming its mother was a hamster, and its father smelled of elderberries. Journalists ran away before he could taunt them a second time.

Hat-tip: Innocent Child. Thanks!

The actual cost to make the PS3 will be more than the selling price. All major consoles take losses for the first year or so, then when technology is more inexpensive to manufacture, they start to post a profit. That is why they post sales at the end of the year and not profits. Most profits are down in the first year for consoles, but they post sale numbers to boost investor confidence. Most money is made on the liscensing of software anyway.

It's a very large amount. That's my point. They lead us to believe it was going to be $600-$700, and people get all worked up about that, and then they make it $500 and people say, "Well, gee, that's not as bad as I was expecting." Whereas had they announced it was going to be a competitive price and then it turned out to be $500, it would infuriate people. My bet is that the system is going to cost somewhere in that range and then have tons of separate components that they sell at inflated prices, effectively making the whole thing cost even more than that. Just a guess based on the PSP.

Sure, that's possible. But to me, 500 dollars is the same as 600-700 dollars. I can't afford any of them, and so any price on that level will piss me off. When my tax return came in I could *barely* afford a 360, and I wasn't ultimately willing to buy it at the 400 dollar price point. I'm a bit more excited about the PS3, so I suppose I'd pay 400. Maybe.

Honestly, I wish they'd quit trying to make their damn videogame consoles a complete multimedia setup unto themselves. I don't want that functionality, I don't need that functionality, and it drives the cost up to get what I do want. I suspect the PSP would be much closer to the DS's price if it just dumped the extraneous stuff and focused on the games.

The reason I am okay with the initial price of $500 is that it just an initial price. It won't stay there for that long. They will eventually get caught up in the same price war that happend with the ps2 and xbox. I expect I won't pay more then $350 but I generally am willing to buy used or refurbished.

take a look at the number you just stated, and tell me why this is disturbing and wrong.

350 fucking dollars?

i can buy a computer for that! (yes, i know this subject has been rehashed over and over. i still play my nes on occasion, so obviously "new" games mean nothing to me. i would rather go with a computer for usability and general price point.)

Well... i think at the same time you have to realize that currently Microsoft and Sony plan on losing HUGE amounts of money on the consoles themselves.

The CEO's hope to make it back by gaining a large enough market share.

This is one case where I actually like Microsoft, if it wasnt for the X-Box 360 im pretty sure the PS3 would be about 700$.

Me personally?

Ive already gave some money to certain people in game stores and made sure that I can get at least 15 of the PS3's as soon as they come out.

I can't afford 500 anymore than I could 600-700.

The only reason why they denied it is because people complained about it.

Mark my words. It's still going to cost a shit load and the games will be even more expensive than the 360s.

Plus if you add in the cost of the xbox 360s hd-dvd addon which is comming soon then a 360 will cost you something along the 500 dollar mark.

That plus actually seems more like a minus.

I'm still not clear on why I'm meant to want the HD-DVD addon, what with Microsoft swearing to high heaven it will never be used for actual games.

im pretty sure video game consoles are tad more expesive to produce than dvd players so changing the media to blu-ray would up the price alone correct, so how could they sell a superior ps3 in the near future with blu-ray for $500 if a blu-ray movie player currently cost $1000.

the ps3 is going to play blu-ray movies right out of the box right?

blu-ray is going up against hd dvd so we will have to new media formats?

how many publishers will the publish both blu-ray and hd dvd? after what all is said and done that is what really matters, third party support.

i think this may turn out as a mini-disc/ beta max phenomena.
