PS3 Price Leaked

THURSDAY APRIL 6 2006 2:00 PM

Submitted by WilWheaton. Edited By WilWheaton.

Geogre Fornay, Vice President of Sony Europe, reportedly disclosed the price of the upcoming PS3 yesterday:

According to Fornay, the PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euros. That translates to between $613 and $736 for us in the States.

Sony has been saying that the PS3 will be expensive for months now, and Fornay followed up his blunder by insisting that these price points are a quality deal for a Blu-ray player. Nevertheless, all previous attempts at selling videogame consoles at this price point have been rather dramatic failures, even when the systems incorporated 'new' multimedia features.

[. . .]

Sony has recently stated that Fornay was making completely personal statements and speculation, and that the announcement is in no way official.

I swear to jeebus, it's a good thing so many geeks still live with their parents, and the rest of them made brazillians in the dot com boom, because these game systems are getting stupid expensive.

New books are almost always $24.95 minimum.

That is just proof that gamers don't read.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I read a lot, though I tend to wait for paperback. But most all the books I read seem to debut with cost, which is why I wait or get something older and cheaper.

Edit: Oh, I think the confusion may be the use of the term "new." I meant recently published, as opposed to "not used."

No offense, but I don't see how this qualifies as "Current Events." It's a friggin' video game- yet another tool to keep the "sheeple" from actually looking at what's going on. I realized that shit was almost singlehandedly (w/ MTV, etc,) dumbing down & wasting the creativity of generations of kids when I was 12!

Is Pokemon Current Events? How about tetherball? Or maybe a guy w/ a pocketwatch saying "You are getting sleeeeeepy." surreal

If you want to talk about something that's wasting untold young minds, how about Ritalin?

Anyway- from the Boards themselves:

CURRENT EVENTS
This is the forum to discuss politics, laws, social issues, current events, religion and other "larger" concerns. The first rule of the current events forum is that you *will* be insulted/enraged by something in here, go forward only those of you with the thickest skin.

LIFESTYLE
Movies, books, TV, comics, GAMES, hobbies, interests, obsessions, anything and everything that affects your life and isn't covered in any of the above boards.

If a fucking video game is a current event or "larger concern" I weep for the future of this nation.

Have you not been paying attention to the boards... Ever?
We've always had news stories about technology, and clearly, plenty of us care deeply about them. Stop trying to drop your fanatical agenda everywhere you possibly can! This thread is clearly not the place for it.

I saw a guy take a shit on the sidewalk once- that doesn't mean that was the place for it. By the Boards definitions I listed from this site my observation is correct. I stand by my observation- this thread is NOT current events & IS, in fact, miscategorized. Just because someone did it before doesn't make it right or correct (I'm sure you see where I could go with this...)

Oh, BTW- this was a completely NEW fanatical agenda. Maybe those video games did something to your brain, yellow-bellied-boy. (Totally random, but if you got in a cage match w/ Kathleen Hanna, she'd tear you to bits...)

HD-DVD= Sucks has half the quality and alot less space to store videos on.

Blueray= What ps3 is useing also keep in mind that prices for a blueray and a HD-dvd player are about 1 grand (us) right now.

PS3 owns the Xbox 360, better graffics better everything and full backwards compatablity with like 1000 games.

So at this moment i still waited 2 years before i ever bought a ps2 and i will prolly wait 2 years to buy a ps3. (once again keep in mind your getting a brand spanken new high deffinition dvd player and a great new gaming system that is better then anything that has hit the market not PC based ever. people said that the ps1 was going to flop, and it beat out the nintendo 64, people said that the xbox was going to kill the ps2 and yet the ps2 still has better sales worldwide and even in the states. also the asian market has snubbed the xbox 360. And for those of you who import games the ps3 is region free, and it runs off of a linux baised OS.

Look, while I personally believe the PS3 is likely to be dominant this console cycle...you're making statements about how a console that isn't even released yet and certainly hasn't been seen in home operation "owns" the console that is out, and is being bought with considerable frequency. You are being one of those people you're talking about, making predictions unsupported by any kind of actual evidence.

All three major consoles are going to need to release and go through at least a year or so of game and peripheral releases before we can have any serious idea who's winning out. And even then nothing will be final until they kill off the generation for a new one. (A couple years ago, I would have said that Nintendo would take second place and leave the Xbox a distant last. Nope.)

yes the ps3 will do all this and more for 1 grand retail. sony will than realize this is way too much for most video game players and parents of video players and than lower the price by lowering the specs which will most likely end as ps2.5.05.05, maybe.
