PS3 Price Leaked

THURSDAY APRIL 6 2006 2:00 PM

Submitted by WilWheaton. Edited By WilWheaton.

Geogre Fornay, Vice President of Sony Europe, reportedly disclosed the price of the upcoming PS3 yesterday:

According to Fornay, the PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euros. That translates to between $613 and $736 for us in the States.

Sony has been saying that the PS3 will be expensive for months now, and Fornay followed up his blunder by insisting that these price points are a quality deal for a Blu-ray player. Nevertheless, all previous attempts at selling videogame consoles at this price point have been rather dramatic failures, even when the systems incorporated 'new' multimedia features.

[. . .]

Sony has recently stated that Fornay was making completely personal statements and speculation, and that the announcement is in no way official.

I swear to jeebus, it's a good thing so many geeks still live with their parents, and the rest of them made brazillians in the dot com boom, because these game systems are getting stupid expensive.

European prices on most consumer goods seemed to be roughly equal to the US, on my trips to Germany, only in euros instead of dollars. (I.e., CDs ranged from 8 to 20 euro, etc.) The only reason they were more expensive is that I had to exchange my dollars for euros at an unfavorable rate. If you make euros, I'd expect them to actually be slightly less relatively expensive, simply because European prices include the sales tax, and American prices do not.

So, if those were real prices, they would not translate to a 700+ dollar PS3, but a 500-600 dollar PS3. Which would still be outrageous, and I would be forced to abandon my desire for a PS3. The 360's (realistically speaking) 400 dollar price point is already more than I'm interested in paying.

The NeoGeo home machine did, in fact, sell to certain dedicated gamers. Since it basically plays arcade games at a substantially lower price than actual arcade cabinets (and as far as I can tell, we're still talking a few hundred dollars a game.), it's a bargain if that's what you're looking for. I don't think it was ever aimed at a wide audience.

Oh, and while some few people paid much more than SRP just for an Xbox 360, they're freaks. The people who bought the overpriced bundles clearly have too much money, but nonetheless got much more than just a console for that 700-1500 bucks. They also got various additional peripherals and games. I doubt that a "just the console and basic peripheral setup" PS3, for 700, would sell well at all.

Quick, everyone go get a job at Game Stop for the discount!

You don't get a discount on systems while working at Gamestop....unless they are used. Which very much sucks, let me tell you.

I think I will be passing on PS3 if this is true. 360 and Revolution will pretty much keep my interest.

That price is about as retarded as everyone who'll buy it at that price.

I guess we'll know if Fornay is telling the truth or Sony, if he's fired prior to launch we can probably expect a longer winter, I mean higher price.

That's at least $600 in addition to an HDTV to properly display your new awesome graphics. If you don't have that, the games I've seen look really odd.

There are people that don't have HD TV's? eeek

Considering that they're still obscenely expensive, and there's not much worthwhile HD content yet (with neither HD video disc format being particularly supported yet, TV being entirely worthless in non-DVD format with the sole, and not exactly HD-rewarding, exception of the Daily Show, and there being relatively little game support.), yes. Actually, I don't know a single person, on or offline, who does own an HD TV.

I would just like to say that I am dumb enough to wait out in the cold over night to pay an insane amount of money for the ps3.

course, this is all assuming that sony can get the damn thing to run and release it. have to work that part out before we worry about the price, i still think november might be premature for a release. so far, it's just broken, not broken like the 360, seriously broken. only one thing matters this console generation anyways Viva la Revolution!

I still remember the price for my original NES. $99 dollars for that seemed like a small fortune to my eager young eyes.

Any pricing statements made today by anyone, even at SCEA (the division of Sony that makes all things playstation), are premature and speculative. A number of important factors are still in play - namely the manufacture of key components (certain chips/processors, blu-ray drives, etc). The cost of manufacturing components tends to fall over time, sometimes dramatically (it depends on the efficiencies in manufacturing). While the information I've got indicates that a PS3 made today would likely cost between $600-$700US for Sony (meaning they'd price it at $699), that's a good six months before it's going to happen.

On top of that, based on the new rollout schedule (worldwide in the fall, instead of staggering Asia, North America, and Europe), the financial models for manufacturing estimates would have to be completely reworked. Based on what I know of SCEA, Sony as a corporation, contract manufacturing and production ramping, I'd put the street price on a PS3 at around $499US to $599US tops when it begins shipping. Going into my own speculation based on experience, I'd expect Sony to then affect a price drop in May '07 (E3's a big trade show, a bold price move would give them a lot more press and steal thunder away from their competitors' announcements), and assuming that Blu-Ray manufacturing costs continue to drop as mannufacturing quantities increase (which is pretty much a certainty), I expect to see PS3's selling for $399-$499 for Christmas 2007. If they felt threat from the competition, Sony corporate could make the decision to allow even greater cuts that would allow SCEA to sell PS3's at a loss (something MS did for a chunk of the early XBox days, I believe).

So, a box that might become obsolete and sells for ~$600 - $750USD is going to compete for my leisure time with:

* a $15 CD
* a $12 book
* a $10 movie ($5 for a rental)
* nearly free TV or Internet
* free face-to-face time with friends or family
* free hiking, free time outdoors, free (etc.)

I don't see the draw. What am I supposedly getting for the small fortune I'm being asked to invest?

If you don't like video games, and you don't understand why people would pay a lot of money for them, why would you even bother reading this thread?

And I watch DVDs on my computer(s).
