PS3 Price Leaked

Geogre Fornay, Vice President of Sony Europe, reportedly disclosed the price of the upcoming PS3 yesterday:

According to Fornay, the PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euros. That translates to between $613 and $736 for us in the States.

Sony has been saying that the PS3 will be expensive for months now, and Fornay followed up his blunder by insisting that these price points are a quality deal for a Blu-ray player. Nevertheless, all previous attempts at selling videogame consoles at this price point have been rather dramatic failures, even when the systems incorporated 'new' multimedia features.

[. . .]

Sony has recently stated that Fornay was making completely personal statements and speculation, and that the announcement is in no way official.

I swear to jeebus, it's a good thing so many geeks still live with their parents, and the rest of them made brazillians in the dot com boom, because these game systems are getting stupid expensive.

I'm happy with my Dreamcast price point: Somewhere under a hundred dollars for the console, four controllers, several VMUs, and roundabouts 16-20 games. (many of which suck, but also including Code Veronica, Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi, Ecco the Dolphin, etc.)

One of the only good deals I've ever gotten on eBay.

From what I've read about the cost of making the system at least for the first 6 months to a year Sony will be taking a loss of about $200 a unit at $700. Things can change in tech quickly, but I also read that it would take 3 years for their cost to get below $300. Could be wrong, but that's what I read. Have fun Sony.

Whoa now, screw that, i'll stick with the 360, I can't see myself spending nearly a thousand dollars on a game system.

I'm not so interested in the PS3.

I'm fully intending to get an xbox 360 when it gets cheaper. I really really want to get Oblivion, and never leave my house again. Halo 3 should be pretty damn good as well.

If that's so, then why can't I find a frigging copy of Final Fantasy 7 for under 30 bucks. (Though I do agree with you completely. I still rock the NES, Dreamcast and PS1)

Dude, you can get a copy of Final Fantasy IV for the GBA, and it's worth a lot more than whatever it costs.

i think they said that the blu ray player alone costs about 1300 dollars at the time of manufacture, if that's true even at 700$ each the console will take a huge loss with every sale.

that said, they could price it at 800$ and it would probably still have a sellout frenzy on release day.
i'd be far more worried about the constant stream of complaints from developers saying it's a malfunctioning, buggy piece of shit that's next to impossible to develop a decent game for.

Ahhh, silly Sony, with all thier MiniDiscs, Memory Sticks, and betamax VCRs.
Just let them have thier fun, sooner or later they'll stop being a first party and make a real killing manufacturing systems for other formats.

Meh. surreal

I'm surprised no one has brought up the practice of bundling.

The PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360 (and probably other systems before them) *never* cost the manufacturer's suggested price. Electronics Boutique, Toys R Us and probably everyone tries to capitalize on the frenzy that new systems bring.

Xbox 360s were being bundled and sold for... $800 was the highest price I saw on Amazon.com. I can't even imagine what a $600-$730 system will actually be sold for.

Are the games gonna be $70+ too?

The system was $400 for the premium package, so that's a significant markup.

I'm gonna get the revolution first probably and then if I feel I need another system drastically because of a bunch of games I want I will get that. I think the ps3 will most likely have tons I want but at that price it will be hard to reason it out to myself.

That's at least $600 in addition to an HDTV to properly display your new awesome graphics. If you don't have that, the games I've seen look really odd.

There are people that don't have HD TV's? eeek

Considering that they're still obscenely expensive, and there's not much worthwhile HD content yet (with neither HD video disc format being particularly supported yet, TV being entirely worthless in non-DVD format with the sole, and not exactly HD-rewarding, exception of the Daily Show, and there being relatively little game support.), yes. Actually, I don't know a single person, on or offline, who does own an HD TV.

shit...if you're not in debt to best buy you just aint cool
plus you're not a lost fan tongue
they are coming down in price though. the sad thing is that our friend just got one that is 2 inches bigger than ours for a cheaper price.

eeek you guys TV was Huge!!!!

That being said i dont buy systems untill they are 200 or less. So nintendo will most likely be the only system to get my money at launch, every body else will just have to wait a long long time lol
