WoW still down - end of world near for sure

For my second WoW related post of the day I'd like to report that right now at the Blizzard offices it's total chaos. People are running around screaming, working 24 hour shifts, brewing endless pots of coffee and responding to every single "d00ds! WTF?!!1" e-mail they get. Either that or they all went home for the day and couldn't care less that the servers are all still down. Luckily the homepage has been updated to keep us informed of what's going down over there:

Patch Maintenance Extended - Eyonix on 3/28/06

We've run into some issues with bringing up the realms. We hope to have them live as soon as possible, but we don't have a current ETA to provide at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we'll provide an update as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience in this matter.

I love how they assume we're all being patient. This is an update to the previous note saying that servers would be up by 5PM, which was an update to the previous note saying they'd be up by 2PM. The folks over at WoW Insider seem to have a bit more info and says:

Community manager Drysc informs us that all servers have been taken offline (as of approximately 6:20 PM PST) to fix an "issue" with patch 1.10. There's no current ETA on bringing the servers back online, nor any information (that I can locate) about what the problem may be. More updates as they come!

Update: As of 9:00 PM PST the login message reports that the issue has been resolved and we should expect to see servers back online within the next 90 minutes.

They link to a forum post that I can't get to because the forums are down, and currently the Realm Status page says all servers are back up, but I still can't log into any of them. Like just about everyone else I've spoken to in regards to this situation today I don't expect things to work perfectly all the time, and during a big update like the one we're getting today a few glitches are to be expected, but what I do expect since I pay a monthly fee is someone, could be anyone, an intern even, to keep us updated as to WTF is going on. A simple post on the main page saying "folks, shit's broke. We're trying to fix it but really have no idea what happened. Might be a few days. Sorry" would go a long way. Hell, tell us that someone from accounting spilled coffee all over the server and it's fried. Just tell us something.

That noise you hear is the sound of nerds angrily screaming into their pillows so as not to disturb the apartment neighbors downstairs.

You never want to look incompetent.

I remember I worked at a networking company and we were changing out modems and in all the mess of cables, we disconnected the wrong one. We plugged it back in no more than 5 seconds later, but we got a phone call anyway from someone saying she was disconnected. I was the new guy and I was honest and said we unplugged her modem by mistake and that her lines should already be back up. She thanked me and hung up but the guy I was working for told me to *never* say it was our fault.

Even though you, I, the lady who called us, all would appreciate the honesty, it just hasn't sunk in to corporate america yet.

By the way, the previous post by me in no way is meant to imply somehow that I am not a nerd because I don't play WoW. Because I'd sort of like to. Except I'm afraid of what it could mean for me.

Still glad I dropped WoW and got an SG membership. Much more entertaining and eats much less time.

i wish my laptop had a graphics card good enough to run WoW.. but on the other hand, i am a recovering EverCrackhead, and i think WoW would go against the 12 steps..

My heart truly goes out to everyone who cant get on the servers. Seriously, it sucks.

I feel like this is actually a plot by someone trying to save the users from their addiction. Like at the end of some movie with mind control or brainwashing.

suddenly.. everyone wakes up.

That just means you're not doing it right. (Take it as you may.)

Say what? Um. I've been playing, on and off, for the last 6 hours. The servers have all been up since about 9:30pm PST, just like they said they'd be. Either this story was woefully outdated before it was even published, or I and the several thousand other people on my server are playing a game that doesn't exist.

Oh but how many times did you try to log in? Note: my comment in the last thread about hundreds of thousands of players simultaneously trying and re-trying to log in still applies. The servers were up and humming along and accepting connections just fine, it just took a couple tries to connect to the authentication server.

A tempest in a teapot indeed. Goodness.

Bean - I posted that story the moment I wrote it, after speaking with 6 different people on as many realms. If you were in, you were very lucky because most people were out. Even people on your server, check the comments on my journal page for back up on that one.
