Huge WoW Outage Forces Nerds Outside

It's like a million nerds cried out in terror . . . and were suddenly silenced.

World of Warcraft is experiencing lengthy downtime, and blaming its service provider for the outages. The virtual world, which now has more than 6 million users, also announced emergency maintenance outages overnight on a large number of game servers (known as "realms").

"We'd like to make all players aware that at this time our internet service provider is experiencing significant complications, and as a result the playability on a large portion of realms has been adversely affected," said a message from Epifanio, Senior Game Master, on the WoW forums.. "Symptoms include but are not limited to lag, random disconnections and slow authentication. Our network technicians are doing everything in their power to work with our ISP so that this issue may be resolved as swiftly as possible."

Netcraft believes that the outages may be the result of a Ddos, citing rather coincidental server maintenance following "complications" from Blizzard's provider, AT&T.

I've paid $50 for plenty of games I played way less than a month. World of Warcraft, on the other hand, has kept my main gaming attention more or less for almost two years. In that time, I've only bought 3 or 4 other games -- none of which I am still currently playing. If I hadn't had World of Warcraft, how many more would I have bought? If you look at it that way, World of Warcraft has probably saved me money.

This...is a very good point. My Playstation started gathering dust once I got EQ. Granted, I've spent a bit on EQ expansions and montly fees, but not nearly as much as I would have if I had continued console gaming.

Blizzard doesn't care, their servers have been hosed since Christmas.

Do the math:
Aproximatly 4 Million Customers
$49.99 per game
$14.99 per month (6 month @ 12.99)

Initial return (4M x $49.99): $199,960,000
Minimum monthly return (4M x $12.99): $51,960,000
Minimum hourly return: $71,178.10 (rounded)

With that kind of money, why can't they fix the problem? Because they obviously don't care.

I really enjoyed the game, I cancelled my account in Feburary.

When I called to cancel, the "tech" I talked to said, "Pretend that you spent $12M on a car, to buy the best car you could possibly get, then you spend another $500K on tuning the engine, then you spend another $500K on maxing out the suspension, but it still isn't good enough, how much more money could you put into it?"
I responded with, "What if you spent all that money, but you still have to wait in line for 10 mintues to drive it?"
He responded with, "Uh .. good point."
In which I retorted, "Please cancel my account, have a good night."

now if you want to stretch that metaphor to an even more painful length, try to fit six million people in that car.

Having worked in a software store, I can tell you that my boss frequently commented that the worst thing that ever happened to the place was Everquest. We sold tons of copies of it, but sales on other games slowed considerably. WoW might even be worse, because unlike EQ, there's actual fun to be had after the first month or two. EQ quickly became a maschistic exercise outside of chatting with friends. When WoW worked in more fast-paced gameplay and actual questing that could be completed in an hour (as opposed to spending hours just trying to organize a raid in EQ) or less, they got more casual gamers interested and while we were selling tons of copies of that when I left, PC games in general were stagnating.

Gee, I've never had this problem in Guild Wars. whatever

Can't believe people pay money to put up with the crap I've heard about WoW.

I can't believe people buy a game and then shell out more money just to play it.

I can't believe people pay $50 to play a shitty game with annoying people and then keep playing it just because it's free.

I can't believe people pay $50 to play a shitty game with annoying people and then keep playing it when it's another $15 a month. tongue

WoW made me stabby, I hated those people.

I can't say too much though, I still play EQ after 4 years. skull

Dude. Yes, many of the 6 million people playing WoW are absolute asshats. This is true, and I have never left the main channels on for more than about a minute after character creation. But I have still managed to meet people who were good to group with, and most of the game's pretty soloable if you can't find people to group with.

Compared to GW, where I have never once met a single person in game who I would not like to strangle. The community was so absolutely aggressively terrible as to kill what might be an otherwise decent game in my book. Also, the social features are all geared towards people who bring in friends and/or guilds, not ones (like me), who in games outside of WoW (which all my friends, almost without exception, play, and where I had a guild last time I logged on, which was some months ago.) tend to try to acquire friends and guilds in game.

I did, during the beta weekends and such, occasionally manage to get a group that worked well enough to complete a mission, but you are then scattered to the four winds again, so I could never go on with the same group. After release...last time I tried playing I discovered that people were actually charging game currency to go on missions with you. The people who weren't quit fifteen seconds into the mission.

Basically, GW inherited Battle.net's mutant inbreeds.

My friend turned me on to WoW and I remember buying my own copy at the store. As I was in line, the guy in front of me noticed my purchase and started talking to me. It was something like this

Him: Oh World of Warcraft! I play that too. blah blah stormrage, blah blah blah rogues blah blah blah magic missile.

Me: Dude, people are staring.

I didn't even know this guy! True story.

WoW is one the reasons I lost the attention of one lady. Not because I play it but because the guy she decided to fuck over me played the game non-stop hence looked pitiful and she wanted to fix him up. Given that's why I've given up on women in this area. When the guy who plays WoW all day, doesn't go to class, doesn't shower more then once a week, doesn't get dressed at all, and can't do laundry gets the women over me. Someone who is the polar opposite. Gah.
