Huge Library of Classic Games Coming to Nintendo Revolution

THURSDAY MARCH 23 2006 3:55 PM

Submitted by WilWheaton. Edited By WilWheaton.

Nintendo plans to bring up to 1000 games from classic systems like TurboGraphix and Sega Genesis to the Revolution.

The Revolution's planned "Virtual Console" download service was already expected to also play older Nintendo-made games like "Mario Bros" and "Zelda."

"No one else can match the environment we're creating for expanding the game experience to everyone," said Iwata, speaking at the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose. "Our path is not linear, but dynamic."

He did not discuss pricing, availability or other details.

This is huge. The Revolution just went from "meh" to "I must have one RIGHT NOW!!111!!1one!eleventy!"

This originally said "over 1000 games," which is incorrect. Sorry. I blame unbridled enthusiasm and !111!!1one!eleventy!-esque excitement. -Ed

Uh... didn't we know this? Isn't this like really old news? We've known the Revolution would have a 'Virtual Library' for about 6 months.

Up until now, it was going to be Nintendo consoles only. Now it includes Genesis and Turbo-Grafx-16.
Thus adding perhaps as many as 25 worthwhile games to the mix!

(Heck, I don't know. I wasn't gaming back then.)

There's really going to have to be some draw beyond the games themselves for me to leave behind my emulators, though. Especially now that I have a PS2 controller-to-USB converter. Multi-tap, even. Translated titles that never made it to the States would be good (especially ones that haven't already been fan-translated). Or enhancements, or extras. Like those old game collections that keep hitting every so often.

why not just get an emulator online? Best game ever is Bionic commando for the Original NES btw

Because they hold the copyrights to all the games and would love an excuse to make money off of them rather than watch people DL the games for free. Which technicaly, if you don't own the origional game, is ilegal.
So I don't blame them.

Part of me says "Why bother? Nintendo lost the emulation war a decade ago.", the other part of me says "But this is a GOOD thing, because Nintendo is finally starting to notice what the consumer wants-maybe they'll follow up this brilliant and obvious decision by putting out a machine that will have software beyond their own! Sure, it'll probably take over a decade, but not everyone can be a quick learner!"

I still maintain that making hard copy compilations of games would be a great idea, too, but it's far more cost effective for them this way....which....cost effective distribution and Nintendo together just sounds funny. No carts, no minidiscs, a sensible popular standard format!? The world is ending!

in other news, I'll burn down NOA is "Link To The Past" and "Link's Awakening" aren't available. I loves Zelda.....loves it so much I'm even going to buy a DS for the new cel shaded Zelda game. smile

So Nintendo save a shitload of time and money getting new, revolutionary and exciting titles developed for their new system, and despite this blatant recycling still somehow manage to convince people that they are new, revolutionary and exciting?

Score.

Chances are the NEW games for the Revolution will be far more original than the 90 million sports titles and sequels planned for the 360 and PS3.

If we're going to argue about innovation in modern gaming, the conversation is most certainly going to center around Nintendo and not the other two companies.

Aside from Katamari Damacy, I can't think of another original game that's come out for a system other than Nintendo.

I hope this won't be the Revolution's selling point, considering anyone with a modded x-box has access to the "Big Ass Emulator Disc"

And yes, I am aware of how illegal it is.

Sounds like an April Folls joke to me. Remember last year's Zelda: WindWaker to be re-released with Twilight Princess' graphics as a bonus for pre-ordering LoZ:TP? (lol... TP...)
