Huge Library of Classic Games Coming to Nintendo Revolution

THURSDAY MARCH 23 2006 3:55 PM

Submitted by WilWheaton. Edited By WilWheaton.

Nintendo plans to bring up to 1000 games from classic systems like TurboGraphix and Sega Genesis to the Revolution.

The Revolution's planned "Virtual Console" download service was already expected to also play older Nintendo-made games like "Mario Bros" and "Zelda."

"No one else can match the environment we're creating for expanding the game experience to everyone," said Iwata, speaking at the Game Developer's Conference in San Jose. "Our path is not linear, but dynamic."

He did not discuss pricing, availability or other details.

This is huge. The Revolution just went from "meh" to "I must have one RIGHT NOW!!111!!1one!eleventy!"

This originally said "over 1000 games," which is incorrect. Sorry. I blame unbridled enthusiasm and !111!!1one!eleventy!-esque excitement. -Ed

uh, the linked article says some of the thousands. not thousands. jesus christ, you almost gave me a heart attack. if you had asked me 6 months ago if nintendo was being smart charging for content downloads like this i would have been iffy about it, but after seeing microsofts success with the live arcade and microstransactions, this could work out very well for them.

i think by having such a large amount of classic games on tap,for a price of course, will be great for most of america.so many people are always looking for original nintendos, super nintendos and genesis systems just to play some games they remember from years back.now to make it easier than tracking down a working system.this is still old news, since theyve been talking about this for some time now for nintendos new system, but not enough people know about it yet.

my main thing is if i can buy/backup what I download... as I'm not to keen on 'renting' these games when I can just download the rom file off the net.

So Nintendo save a shitload of time and money getting new, revolutionary and exciting titles developed for their new system, and despite this blatant recycling still somehow manage to convince people that they are new, revolutionary and exciting?

Score.

Hrm. Wait. Actually, according to gamespot:

According to Nintendo, over 1,000 games for Sega's Genesis console,
released in 1989, will be added to the Revolution's library. Joining them will be an undisclosed number of titles from the Hudson's TurboGrafx console, also released in 1989 and codeveloped by electronics giant NEC. Though no specific titles were mentioned, Nintendo said it is taking a "best of" approach in selecting which games will come to the Revolution.

Because they hold the copyrights to all the games and would love an excuse to make money off of them rather than watch people DL the games for free. Which technicaly, if you don't own the origional game, is ilegal.
So I don't blame them.

I just hope they eventualy bring over more games that were never released in north america.

Oh yeah and "Aw, fuckforshit. My bad." = Best Wil Wheaton quote ever. Yoink!

Uh... didn't we know this? Isn't this like really old news? We've known the Revolution would have a 'Virtual Library' for about 6 months.

i'm thinking they made the same mistake you originally did. and gamespot's "journalism" is for shit: when the sex worker's story broke, they wrote that prostitutes had a problem with gta.
