How Netflix Fucks You Over

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11 2006 9:49 AM

Submitted by Shalome. Edited By Shalome.

If you rent a lot of movies from Netflix, you may find yourself on NetFlix's secret "good customer" list. However, unlike most businesses who reward frequent customers with discounts, specials, and freebies, it turns out that Netflix punishes frequent customers with slow delivery times.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix didn't publicly acknowledge it differentiates among customers until revising its "terms of use" in January 2005 — four months after a San Francisco subscriber filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company had deceptively promised one-day delivery of most DVDs.

"In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service," Netflix's revised policy now reads. The statement specifically warns that heavy renters are more likely to encounter shipping delays and less likely to immediately be sent their top choices.

The promises Netflix makes on the "How It Works" section of their website:

With Netflix you can rent as many DVDs as you want from the comfort of your home and have them delivered to your door in about 1 business day!

You keep a revolving library of up to 3 DVDs at a time and can exchange them for new available DVDs as often as you like.

Cute, Netflix.

Also, NetFlix, if it engages in this practice of slowing down users, has an obligation to publicly announce on their site or in the terms of service that it will be "throttling" certain subscribers based on high rental frequency.

Um, did you read the article?

So, you're saying that I'm right? And you're pointing out that NetFlix (once someone called them out on it) came forward and made public this business practice. So, I guess I don't get why you're trying to correct me, if not just to be picky. confused

Not much different than being bounced from the all-you-can-eat buffet when you decide to take up residence in the kitchen. Netflix should probably have made their policy more clear, but I'm having a hard time mustering up sympathy for a small number of people who received their movie rentals later than they expected. It just goes to show you that people will tolerate (and even request) gross injustice, but inconvenience their entertainment, and the outrage will flow like a river of blood.

I always mail my movies back on Friday, so that Netflix gets them on Monday, and sends me the new releases that come out on Tuesday.
It used to work really well. Now though, I've had the same 6 new releases at the top of my queue for over 2 months. And every week, they get my movies Monday, and then on Tuesday they send me a movie from my 7-9 spot in my queue. I don't even get a chance at new releases any more, and I wouldn't even consider myself a heavy user. I only get 3 movies a week.
Needless to say, I'll be cancelling my subscription before I get billed again.
Fuck you Netflix, or should I call you NetFIX?
Oh yeah, Blockbuster sucks asscock.

They may be fucking you but they aren't fucking me; I've been a Netflix customer for the past 3-4 years, average 4 discs a week and never had a problem.

I have been using Netflix since 2000 sometimes I watch a lot of movies and they will slow down the rate I recieve them a bit and sometimes I watch less and it seems to reset me to faster delivery.

Either way.. so what? If you want to have more movies available to you buck up for a plan that allows you to have more movies at a time. The policy makes sense and without it there would probably be no service at all and I do not see many espousing the glories of trudging down to Blockbuster or going to the local Indie store to find the only two copies of what you are looking for are gone.

If a movie has a very long wait, let it sit at the top of the queue till it is delivered. That is why I have a queue, something else will come. They will all come in time. If you absolutely have to see that movie now then get up off the couch and go get the movie if you can find it at the local rental store.

I see rants about this all over the web, but really... ummm if they slow you down go do something else for awhile and let your delivery times reset. Read a book... Go to work... hell anything.

I wish I had the link there was a really good site I found where someone had setup multiple accounts and seemed to have worked out the algorithm and circumstances under which you would get slowed down. But that was well over a year ago.

Obviously using the service for the 6th year I love it... slow or fast it is better than going to the video store.

Call me the oddball. I'll just stick to Blockbuster. Things never mail to me on time and my service always sucks.

I'll be happy when some cable company or something does Pay Per View right... have a complete library of movies (even if they have to partner with one particular studio in the beginning) that we can choose from not just new releases. Have it available anytime with On Demand/Tivo type controls. Uncut and unedited for television. Yeah, that would really stick it up the ass of movie rental places.

No wonder my DVD collection is so large.

I've not had it that long, but so far I've been averaging 6 movies a week with no problem.

I hope they don't move me down to a slower plan.

I love Netflix!

However I have observed that while my first movies arrived shockingly fast - basically the next day - more recently movies are arriving very slowly.

At first, if I put a movie in the mail on monday, I was likely to get a replacement on wednesday. Now, if I put a movie in the mail on monday, it doesn't arrive til saturday.

My roomate loves netflix and hasn't ever had any trouble with it. 'Course she isn't some housebound 'tard trying to intentionally order enough dvds to break the system.

I dunno. I rent about 10-15 movies amonth (yes...I have no life) and I have always had a 1 day turnover.

Then again, when you rent them 5 at a time, it's not like I am sitting by the mailbox wondering where my copy of "HellBoy" went.

I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the plan you're on, too. They're going to be a lot less picky about the 8-at-a-time folks that are putting their children through college than with the 1-at-a-time lightweights.

Me, I'm on 2 at a time. In theory I should be able to watch one DVD every day and be covered by the overlap. In practice that isn't going so well. Though part of that is that they don't operate on Saturday.
