How Netflix Fucks You Over

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 11 2006 9:49 AM

Submitted by Shalome. Edited By Shalome.

If you rent a lot of movies from Netflix, you may find yourself on NetFlix's secret "good customer" list. However, unlike most businesses who reward frequent customers with discounts, specials, and freebies, it turns out that Netflix punishes frequent customers with slow delivery times.

Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix didn't publicly acknowledge it differentiates among customers until revising its "terms of use" in January 2005 — four months after a San Francisco subscriber filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company had deceptively promised one-day delivery of most DVDs.

"In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service," Netflix's revised policy now reads. The statement specifically warns that heavy renters are more likely to encounter shipping delays and less likely to immediately be sent their top choices.

The promises Netflix makes on the "How It Works" section of their website:

With Netflix you can rent as many DVDs as you want from the comfort of your home and have them delivered to your door in about 1 business day!

You keep a revolving library of up to 3 DVDs at a time and can exchange them for new available DVDs as often as you like.

Cute, Netflix.

My mother and father have been suspicious about this for a while now. Every time I go see them my old man complains that Netflix is getting slower even though they have a warehouse in our area.

They shouldn't have been deceptive, but the practice makes sense. An unlimited per month account is about 20 bucks. if you get 10 movies delivered to you a month (about 3 a week, which is what I end up having delivered) you're paying 2 bucks per movie. I can only watch one movie a night.

But if you can watch all three of your delivered movies in one day, then you could probably approach 20 movies a month, which halves their profits. The company would be stupid to not slow you down.

Well, I'm in Maine and they almost always come a day later than they're supposed to. And, thinking about it, the one DVD they did send on time recently came with an e-mail asking if it had been sent on time, and then every DVD after that has been about a day late again.

Sounds like I might be cancelling my subscription...

It certainly makes sense as far as attempting to maximize profitability, but the people that are being punished seem as though they may be the least willing to put up with such behavior for very long.

GameFly works for me, because it's rare that I can play a single game in a day, and even more rare that I could complete two games in a day ... but three movies, well, I can do that easily on a lazy and snowy Saturday.

Wasn't there one class action lawsuit about their "promises" already? I'm surprised the one business day thing is still up.

There is an article on this in my local paper. It says that they pay 78-cents to ship a movie. So if they shipped you 23 movies a month, they wouldn't be making any money. But it still sucks that you get put on the backburner for movies you want and that they'll deliberatly slow down your deliveries.

Never had a problem at all - I suppose a company that has property like DVDs can put you on a "bad guy" list - it's their priority. But I always, always get my chosen discs in timely manner.

Come to think of it, it's really the only thing that keeps me from canceling; The movies run about half-and-half - on a scale of, say, swell tio stinkeroo. There again I figure that's the use of Netflix - so you can see what you really hesitated upon buying or going to the movies for.

Meh.

True. But so is a railroad spike thru the head.

I've been a long time Netflix user and fan. However, with that being said, I must say, the service is getting worse...

The closest warehouse to me is only an hour by car, and it still takes me 4 days to get my movies.

Netflix will "ship" a movie, only to have it show back up as returned the next day.

The top movie in my queue has been there for weeks, stating a "very long wait"

Thirded.

I haven't had any scenarios of my DVD arriving absurdly late, but it still sucks that frequent, rule abiding customers get the shaft.

On the other hand most rental stores don't carry the movies I'm interested in seeing. Blockbusters selection of foreign films and anime is really pitiful. Without netflix I wouldn't have been able to see movies and series like Straw Dogs, Battle Royale, Trigun, The Last LIfe In The Universe, Gungrave, etc.

Maybe you should try picking better movies? You can hardly blame the video rental place when you choose to rent a shitty movie. Unless you're complaining about their recommendation system, which would make a bit more sense.

Exactly. Living in a rural area, most independant films don't come to theaters, retail or rental shops. And I've been fucked over worse by Blockbuster (charged for movies returned on time, charged several times at different stores for the same overdue fees, charged for fees without being notified, etc.).
