MySpace Blamed for Sex Offenses

In yet another example of the internet being blamed for every possible crime, MySpace.com is under scrutiny because seven underage girls were assaulted by men they met through the website.

Police are investigating whether as many as seven teenage girls have been sexually assaulted by men they met through the popular Web site MySpace.com.

The girls, ages 12 to 16, are from Middletown and say they were fondled or had consensual sex with men who turned out to be older than they claimed. None of the incidents appeared to be violent, said Middletown Police Sgt. Bill McKenna.

The social networking Web site allows users to create profiles that can include photos, personal information and even cell phone numbers.

In a statement Thursday, MySpace.com said it was committed to providing a safe environment for its users. The site, which includes safety tips, also prohibits use by anyone younger than 14, though a disclaimer says the people who run the site can't always tell if users are lying about their ages.

In other news, it turns out that many MySpace users regularly lie about their age, weight, height, attractiveness, and how interesting and/or difficult their lives are.

Why are you so against ANY responsibility being put on a kid to make good decisions?

Because kids are... well, KIDS! They need GUIDANCE and CONTROL. They aren't born knowing what's right from wrong, what's safe and what's dangerous, etc.

Sometimes the best way for them to learn things is to test their boundaries and you know, fuck up and get in trouble. Which is not to say I think that getting molested by creepy old guys on MySpace is a good thing, I'm just speaking in general.

Well I guess the next time a 14 year old girl is raped and killed by some dumb fuck from the internet.... we can just assume the parents couldn't have stopped it because kids "act like kids and it was a good lesson learned" whatever

How many parents are internet savvy enough to know how to access their kid's account. My sister has a 10 year old, and she doesn't even allow her on the web without mom in the room, but my sister is also 29 and grew up with the net. There are plenty of older parents that don't know a whole lot about computers, and thus have no visablity to what dangers there are on the net. I think that this recent exposure may wake up alot of parents.

You don't have to know about how to work a computer to keep your kid from going places with people they don't know.

yep, and i'm sure every parent knows what their 13-16 year old daughter is doing 24/7. oh yeah, if they "care" they will bolt lock their daughter's door at night, hire a bodyguard to follow her everywhere, screen all of her phone calls and ban her from going online.

sorry, that's not how it works. yeah, some parents are shitty, but sleazy pedophiles on myspace are counting on teenagers acting like teenagers and not telling their parents everything.

i mean, teenage girls are famous for not listening.

I still don't understand why this is a hard fucking concept.

yeah. i am too.

after seeing enough parents who tried everything with their kids, and kids who still "fucked up"..got a dui, got pregnant, stole stuff, smoked pot, got drunk, whatever, i really cut the parents some slack.

i'm not saying there aren't shitty parents. but there is a little space between
childhood and adulthood. it's called being a teenager. and you can not control your teenager. you can guide them, pay thousands for private school, braces, haircuts, seven jeans...you can love them, try and be there for them, send them to a shrink, get them on ritalin, on prozac. you can send them to rehab for 40,000 for one month, you can do everything you can and still have your TEENAGER FUCK UP.

on the other hand, when i see these stories i put all the blame on the MEN. leave the 14 year olds alone and turn yourself in. seriously.

Zweibel, no one's talking about constant surveillance. But you seem to be saying that no matter what you do, no matter what kind of parent you are, there's nothing you can do to keep teenagers out of trouble, so why bother. What I get from you is that once a kid turns thirteen, all the parents can do is keep the bills paid and stay out of the way.

i am totally not saying that.

i'm saying that it is silly to blame the parents when things go wrong with their teenagers.

some kids don't rebel. some kids with shitty parents end up decent people. some kids with great parents end up dead or killing others. that's all i'm saying.

But don't you think it's likely kids with attentive parents who try to keep tabs on them are more likely to be decent people and kids with shitty parents are more likely to get in trouble?

actually, no. as a person with great, over protective parents, and as a person with friends in the same position, i can say teenagers with attentive parents can find a way around those parents and be just bad and sneaky as a kid who has shit parents.

the chances are greater they turn out OK, but it's not gonna guarantee a completely safe and happy life.

yes. i said they aren't really less likely to get in trouble, but more likely to turn out OK.

as in, yes, a child of very caring parents could meet a 40 year old fuckface who says he is 25 at a coffee shop. a child of trash mama with 3 boyfriends who doesn't give a flying fuck could also meet this dude. the girls are both 14 and stupid.

but in the long run the child of the caring parents is more likely to turn out ok.

in other words..14 year old girls are equally innocent and yes... stupid. some have the support to grow out of it. others remain 14 forever.

the 40 year old males who prey on them suck for the same reasons all the time. they are the preditors and the losers.
