E3 Gets Less Sexy, More Lame

According to CNET, video game companies exhibiting at E3 will have to attract attention based on the merit of their product.

From the ESA's E3 handbook:

Material, including live models, conduct that is sexually explicit and/or sexually provocative, including but not limited to nudity, partial nudity and bathing suit bottoms, are prohibited on the show floor, all common areas, and at any access points to the show.

How is EA going to draw visitors to its booth now?

I guess DOA 3 will have to be marketed as "a really great fighting game" now. Good luck with that, guys. - Ed.

its a sad day for gaming when someone enforces an ethic that requires a product to be good and not just flashy...... wait... nevermind

They allowed full nudity in years past? I should start taking "gaming" more seriously.

Booth babes added nothing to E3 other than to cause massive crowding of mouthbreathing geek boys around certain booths. I certainly won't miss them this year.

Just hope they don't start following you around instead.

What get's to me is that they're doing it cause of the flak from politicians. If it was to sale based on product merit or attract female gamers, then I'm all for it.
Then again, I'm not a serious gamer.

Why can't politicians stick to something they are good at?

But to be perfectly honest, if EA had hot naked chicks at their booth I'd still say their products sucked. (unless they were Suicide Girls, in which case I might be pursuaded to purchse a Sims 2 Expansion)

That proviso has always been in the handbook, they're just choosing to make a big deal about enforcing it. Though my favorite part of the story:

ESA said it has sole discretion to determine what is acceptable.

Yeah, no vagueness there. As for how this effects E3...it won't, it's always lame.

I'm glad they are knocking off the crap. I was sick of running into booth babes as they block the video games...

And the best booth babes were Nintendo's anyways...because they were cute girls that KNEW the games and showed them to us....instead of sat there and look pretty and stupid

Ditto.... dropping Booth Babes at E3 works for me. I recall walking around lines of guys just to get photos taken with them. A few times I had to go through Booth Babes just to get some freebies.

But why are they bitching about an industry ONLY convention not even open to the public? Media, or working in some degree in the industry. And even then... you still have to be 18 or older just to get in the door (unless they are looking to change the requirements this year).

But I admit, a few folks (the ones with power) got their kids inside. But I bet this is E3 saving face, because if they don't work on this they'll look like the bad guys claiming they want the sexy booth babes.

This still won't stop the after-show parties. Max Hardcore (porn king) was on hand at one of the devs "parties". He even brought a few girls with him. Sex is clearly an underlying aspect of E3.

Now if only the comic book conventions would catch on... that would be something.

Max Hardcore (porn king)

I like to think of him as more of a porn usurper, or porn despoiler.

I'd agree with that. His stuff is seriously off the beaten path (pun intended). It's not my cup 'o tea, but damn he had serious groupies at that party. I was more interested in getting a few free demo game copies of Prince of Persia... but I didn't have a Media badge. Grrr...!!
