Silly String Saves Lives - Iraq Edition

Headed off to Iraq?

In for days of house to house fighting?

Make sure to pack plenty of Silly String.

Don't have time to check every dark corner of a room as you rush to a covered position? A few quick squirts of silly string highlights suspicious shapes that would otherwise be hidden. Need a quick test for tripwires? Let loose a liberal spray of silly string; If it hangs over an invisible strand rather than floating to the ground to rest, your suspicions are confirmed.

Alejandro Hernandez of the Marines reports:

On many occasions the silly string has saved me and my men's lives.

Want to donate Silly String to the troops? Alejandro has requested as much as anyone cares to send for his brother at:

I saw this on Bruce Schneier's blog earlier today. Fucking hilarious, but one really has to wonder who the hell first tried this, and what the hell they were doing with Silly String in their pack in combat.

Spare no expense for the safety of our troops! "Sorry Sergeant. We don't have any more Kevlar, or HMV armor, but...ummm...try this..."

That's where I first saw it, too.
In fact, the man deserves a hat tip - pardon my forgetfulness in not mentioning it before.

They probably had the idea before they even went there. If not, then they probably just asked someone from back home to send it to them.

Pitch a rubber grenade around a corner so it bounces around crazily, wait for the guys inside to run out, kill them in an ambush?

How about grenades that slowly roll down walls when you throw them at them...like those sticky ninja things!
