OpenOffice.org 2 is Here!

The long-anticipated OpenOffice.org 2 is here!

OpenOffice.org 2.0 is the productivity suite that individuals, governments, and corporations around the world have been expecting for the last two years. Easy to use and fluidly interoperable with every major office suite, OpenOffice.org 2.0 realises the potential of open source.

With new features, advanced XML capabilities and native support for the OASIS Standard OpenDocument format, OpenOffice.org 2.0 gives users around the globe the tools to be engaged and productive members of their society.[/QUOTEOpenOffice has all the tools people have come to expect from expensive, closed-source solutions like Microsoft Office, but it is free, as in beer and speech.OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute.

OpenDocument is an XML file format for saving office documents such as spreadsheets, memos, charts, and presentations. It was approved as an OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) standard at the beginning of this year. OpenDocument, set as a default in OpenOffice, is cited by proponents as a way of fighting vendor lock-in associated with proprietary formats. Already, it is the required office format for internal archives of the US State of Massachusetts.

Mac users will have to wait a bit longer before a stable version is available but Windows and Linux users can download it (76Mb) NOW!

Ed note - I used OpenOffice.org to write Dancing Barefoot, and Just A Geek. It is incredibly powerful, full-featured, and easy to use. As a bonus, there's no Clippy.

StarOffice is OpenOffice however with some extra fonts and shit that cannot be used in Open Source Software because of licensing.

OpenOffice has never taken off on the Mac because it needs X11 to run, and is fugly. MS Office for Mac is still king however I love my Pages and Keynote. Smooth with a Capital Smooth.

I have the java version on my mac. I'm not estatic about it, but it was within my price range and it's not bad. I never used Micro Office much, so a lot of what it assumes is habitual for me isn't.

NeoOffice is a port of OpenOffice to run natively on Mac without X11 and have a more "Mac" look-and-feel. I don't think it's 100% there yet but it's something to keep an eye on. Also, I think the OpenOffice team were planning on doing this themselves fairly soon too.

NeoOffice is Java based it is ultimately doomed to always underperform.

A full native Cocoa port is the only real Mac option for the future. However their is so little demand for such a beast that their has been little effort made to create it.

Which is sad OpenOffice promises so much.

I've been using OpenOffice 2.0 beta2 for the past month and have seen that lightbulb maybe twice. While almost as good as not seeing it at all, it is significantly more tolerable than that dumber-than-a-box-of-rocks paperclip.

Well, at a price of $0 for Open Office and $0 for X11 on my Mac, it's fucking beautiful! wink

My mom says OpenOffice.org 2.0 is fantastic, she has it on her PC rather than whatever it is the Microsoft makes that de-evolves people back into dinosaurs. wink biggrin

It's a shame that actually trying to use OpenOffice makes me want to commit hari-kiri.

MS might suck, but their office suite is so much easier to use.
