Nasty Boys

Remember when a t-shirt was just a t-shirt? Not anymore. Clothing manufacturer David & Goliath are feeling the heat from several social groups who claim their shirts, which have statements such as “Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them” and “Boys Are Smelly” emblazoned across the front, are a threat to male self-esteem.

The shirts have been around for three years, but were recently thrust into the national spotlight by pundits debating whether feminism impugns the rights of males and whether a T-shirt could be an instrument of oppression.

Founder Todd Goldman isn’t too worried though.

We were pretty well known in the juniors segment, but this has really expanded our exposure," said Todd Goldman, founder and president of David & Goliath. "I couldn't buy this kind of publicity."

Well Todd, here's a little more.

Pot Suckers Stir British Authorities

The BBC reports that laboratories in England are testing marijuana-flavored lollypops for illicit chemicals. Authorities and parents are worried that the hemp lollypops encourge drug use. The suckers are labeled as containing hemp extract.

I mean, there's a big enough drug problem as it is. These lollies are selling for 30p when ordinary lollies are about 10p, the kids are going to think they're something special,” stated Angela Nichol, of New Farnley, Leeds.

While authorities test the lollypops for any THC, shop owners say that they are completely within their rights to sell the suckers.

"Che" Everywhere

Che Guevara's face plasters everything from T-shirts to bikini's; Elizabeth Hurley was spotted using a $4,500 handbag emblazoned with the Argentine revolutionary's mug. While people understand that Guevara is a revolutionary/community of some kind, most don't know the history of revolutionary Cuba or Guevara's part in it.

In "Loving Che," Ana Menéndez writes about the revolutionary through the lens of a Cuban painter's obsession with his image. "There were several catalysts to the novel, the strongest of which was just seeing the face of Che everywhere," the former journalist says. "To me, it's a sad symbol, in a way. He has a very sad, faraway expression. [Castro's revolutionaries] had been in power for some time. Perhaps he was dealing with some personal disillusionment.[...]"There's just this fascination people have with the man - which is not of the man, but of the photograph."

What would Guevara say about his his visage being sold on T-shirts? What he say to the communists and revolutionaries that buy them?

Thirty Percent of Americans Want Only Abstinence Taught

A recent NPR/Harvard School of Government/Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 46 percent of Americans want contraception with heavy emphasis on abstinence taught in sexual education programs. The poll also found that 28 percent of people thought that it is inappropriate for "teens can obtain birth control pills from family planning clinics and doctors without permission from a parent". In addition, the poll found that parents think their daughters are better prepared to examine sex and sexuality than their sons:

Sixty percent of parents said their daughter was very prepared; only 36 percent said the same of their son. Interestingly, fathers (60 percent) were as likely as mothers (59 percent) to say their daughter was very prepared. However, fathers (23 percent) were much less likely than mothers (45 percent) to say their son was very prepared.

The poll also examines how Americans define abstinence as well a statistical breakdown between the differences of what Evangelic Christians and non-Evangelicals consider appropriate to teach in sexual education.

More Palahniuk News; Review of Documentary

Movie Poop Shoot has posted an extensive review of Postcards from the Future, a documentary that looks at Chuck Palahniuk’s novels, the “death of transgressive fiction”, and a weekend in the author’s life. The documentary, which is being sold exclusively at www.chuckpalahniuk.net, examines in great detail the interaction between Chuck Palahniuk and his fans, including a moment where:

“Palahniuk looks in disbelief as he is being interviewed by a puppet named “Special Ed,” and the face he makes is priceless. We can read his mind and it’s almost as if he is saying, “Being a nice guy is one thing, but Hemingway never had to answer to any sock puppets.”

Movie Poop Shoot has also posted an interview with the documentry's filmmakers.

German Cannibal Digests Court Sentence

German Cannibal, Armin Meiwes narrowly escaped a life sentence in a German court this past week. 42 year-old Meiews, on trial for killing and eating a 43 year-old man whom he had met on the Internet, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to eight and a half years behind bars. The court rejected the prosecution's plea for a murder conviction and life sentence because the victim, Bernd Juergen Brandes, had actually instructed Meiwes to eat him alive and then feast on his remains. The horrific display of sexual fetishism, which he recorded on video tape, has sparked shock and fascination around the world. Psychiatrists found Meiwes deeply disturbed but sane, and he could be released as early as 2008. The prosecution is expected to appeal.

X-Men Strikes Again In 2005!

During the promotion of his new film at The Sarasota Film Festival, veteran sci-fi actor Patrick Stewart ‘fessed we should all keep our eyes peeled for X-Men 3 in 2005. The Bradnenton Press reports:

Despite Star Trek's continued success in syndication and on the silver screen, a younger generation of viewers knows Stewart best not as Captain Picard, but as Professor Charles Xavier, from the two blockbuster X-Men pictures, the latter of which opened in 2003.
"X-Men 3 should come out in 2005," Stewart said on the red carpet. During the discussion inside the theater he said he hoped the franchise continues for several more films.

Patrick was at the festival promoting his new film, "The Lion in Winter," which co-stars Glenn Close and debuts on Showtime in May.

Chinese, German Media Upset Over "Body Worlds" Display

The Associated Press reports that Body Worlds, an art workshop in China, has drawn some attention by Chinese, as well as German, media because of the possibility that some of the corpses in the display may have been executed prisoners, as well as corpses that may not have been donated.

The displays, which feature bodies that have been injected with epoxy and silicon, are the creation of Gunther von Hagens, a native German, who has set up shop in Northeastern China.
